Disaster bringing these games into PS especially under lights. Older people will not travel as they are afraid of freezing in there. Families will not bring smaller kids due to cold and bedtimes also rea#1487 (Galway) - Posts: 1 - 09/10/2025 11:23:47 2639045 Link 2 |
Also the bot of business it gives to shops and restaurants in athenry is badly needed on those big hurling days. Bad call by the county board.

Agreed clarinbridge will need to look at themselves in the second half and nobody else. I believe the lack of an old head cost the bridge in that game as soon as the town started coming back it always felt ominous that the town would pip it. The bridge only niland and salmon as their older heads at 26/27 compare to loughrea with coen, hoban and hanrahan etc. Thought killean was outstanding best he's played all year and the younger morgan was very good when he came on. The town will be hard bet now.

Congratulations Gort on beating Michael Cusacks 1-15 to 14 points in the U17BHC County Final. Hard luck Cusacks. Next year. SouthGalway (Galway) - Posts: 61 - 12/10/2025 14:35:49 2639463 Link 0 |
PS under lights should be given a chance. Good for clubs in west to be able to bring kids into see two good matches, hopefully will be good for hurling in west. and traffic will not be a problem on a sat evening, nor will people have to turn up an hour before the first game to get a seat in the stand. batitout (Galway) - Posts: 75 - 12/10/2025 19:13:20 2639538 Link 1 |
We need to spread the hurling gospel in Galway. The more lads with hurls in the their hands the better for the county team. Rather than taking shots at clubs west of the Corrib who have work doubly hard to keep hurling going, there should be more done to help the development of young talented hurlers in those areas. As was mentioned, Pearse Stadium gives a better chance for young lads from the other side of the county to see a couple of cracking matches. It's an effort to try something different, and as was mentioned it ensures a lot more people get a seat in the stand. Let's give it a chance, rather than sticking to the safe status quo all the time. While acknowledging the hard work that goes into promoting the game .....bringing those young lads to Athenry for the games would be far more beneficial . Take for example the young followers of Moycullen who never play a senior hurling Championship game outside of PS , open to correction on that one. Its not their fault I'm sure , but why not let them play championship in Athenry - far better chance of enhancing the Gospel there than in a stadium that lacks atmosphere and gives everyone a logistical nightmare. Bring young lads to Athenry to stand on the hill and see nothing, that's how it would work out. And we do bring our young kids across the Corrib when our clubs are playing, they go to Athenry plenty, but are watching junior/ (maybe inter) group/KO matches, small crowd, no problem there with seeing matches, but of course quality is much lower. Pity that Moycullen only play all their group matches in PS, that does not make any sense, and I am not going to fact check you as I am sure you know what you are talking about. So to counter your argument, kids west of Corrib (and all of Galway city) do go to other grounds watching their clubs in league/group/KO games, but now a huge opportunity to see high quality SFs with added bonus/x factor of being under lights. It should excite them. Hopefully this is a good thing, basically for a big county we are only accessing half the available playing talent. Same for football, but I don't care about that (smiley face) batitout (Galway) - Posts: 75 - 13/10/2025 09:59:29 2639675 Link 1 |
Going to be great to see loads of Carraroe and Clifden heads at the hurling on Saturday so. Great we're catering for just Spideal, Breathnachs, Moycullen and not for the clubs and their supporters who are actually playing. All to give little Johnny a chance to watching Daithi Burke in a half-empty stadium just so the county board can show off some new lights. Also, there will be traffic. I'm from a dual club and attended the football on Saturday and there was loads of traffic and I ended up arriving late for the first game as a result. I left my house over an hour before throw-in. and Barna/Furbo and Salthill/Knocknacarra and Rahoon/Newcastle and Liam Mellows and Castlegar. I suppose we will never agree, so be it. batitout (Galway) - Posts: 75 - 13/10/2025 14:23:25 2639760 Link 1 |
What's stopping them going to the final in there? Semi's doesn't have to be...

I think this 'Athenry atmosphere' thing is a figment of the imagination. A flattish terrace, coupled with a tiny stand, that you'd need to be a vip to get into. Poorish viewing vantage points all around, especially when packed out for semis and finals. Doubly disastrous then in inclement weather conditions. . Whatever about athenry atmosphere there will be absolutely ZERO atmosphere in PS.

I don't think any hurling fan would object to developing the facilities in Athenry , it still remains the premier venue for top class hurling in the County. Lets not forget the players in this discussion- I think if you surveyed them , Pretty sure that there would be an overwhelming majority in favour of Athenry. Anyways we are where we are - lets hope for two cracking games on Saturday . My Prediction: St Thomas's v Loughrea Final LostforWords (Galway) - Posts: 7 - 14/10/2025 09:20:59 2639884 Link 1 |
I'm not sure about that in terms of the players. The facilities are much better in Pearse Stadium, as well as the playing surface. Players will want the best conditions to perform and I'd say a lot of them would opt for Salthill.

It's literally not. Senior semi-final days in Athenry are the best day on the local GAA calendar, bar none. The atmosphere is brilliant. You also don't need to be a VIP to get into the stand, just leave and arrive on time as our friends out west advise us all the time. People from Renmore/Castlegar would make Athenry before Pearse Stadium on match day.
