Fenton ahead of Cavanagh or O'Se? behave yourself

These lists are always painful. All about opinion. It ain't a bad team in fairness but at the end of the day who cares what Spillane says? I'd be more inclined to set up a comedy thread on the team picked by Danny Hughes, where to even start with that? TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8385 - 13/12/2016 16:15:57 1939932 Link 0 |

Man Connolly is the greatest footballer to every play the game ffs he's an automatic choice. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 13/12/2016 16:30:15 1939937 Link 0 |

Team of the century would go back to 1916. It looks more like the last 30 years, and is made up of All Ireland winners. No Down players from the 60'sfor example. thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1879 - 13/12/2016 18:34:08 1939962 Link 0 |
Graham Canty is another notable omission. He was incredible for Cork right throughout the 00's. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2113 - 13/12/2016 18:34:44 1939963 Link 0 |
Excellent mature response. Completely right in what you say. Dooher was so important to the Tyrone team, more so than Flynn, Alan B etc. Now in years to come that could certainly change

It's his team of THIS century, as in from 2000 to 2015 when he picked the team, so not much chance of any of the Down team from the 60's making it.

I wouldn't have Michael Murphy on it.Talent wise he's brilliant but performance wise he's not up there. He's failed to fulfil his talent with a simlar level of performance. uibhfhaili1986 (Offaly) - Posts: 1296 - 13/12/2016 22:18:11 1939999 Link 1 |
Pat must be down a bob or two with Kerry in the doldrums. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4516 - 13/12/2016 22:43:34 1940006 Link 0 |
What has Bernard done in the last 12 months> If he wants on the team he would be better dropping the last 12 months.

Isn't keegan poty? I like the dubs but you are really putting me off them. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 13/12/2016 23:51:31 1940017 Link 1 |
One Dublin player on the team says it all. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3846 - 14/12/2016 02:59:07 1940020 Link 0 |
Got milk I couldn't give a rats plus the team is picked from 2000 onwards not the last 12 months. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 14/12/2016 10:21:11 1940031 Link 0 |
It's very hard to pick teams like this. I mean you'd imagine that Tomás Ó Sé is a shoe in at right half back but then you look at Lee Keegan's performances over the last few years and it is very hard to leave him out. That's just one example in one position. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13797 - 14/12/2016 10:35:51 1940033 Link 1 |
exactly...so why is Fenton in there? and Connolly is not an automatic choice by far. Yes he has the talent, but he is yet to deliver a major performance in an AI final, perhaps even a semi final, which is why he has never won player of the year. When a younger generation look back on AI finals from this Dublin team I don't think many will be convinced that he was one of the greats from what we've seen so far. The Brogan's would be quicker on my team than Connolly any day of the week. SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2558 - 14/12/2016 10:41:15 1940036 Link 0 |
I think he was referring to your claim of Fenton being POTY so leave the rats posteriors alone. Its still a little early to put some of these players on pedestals but they do have the potential to do what Kilkenny have in the hurling so we'll see. Regarding Fentons attribute of being through on goal nearly every game that doesn't add a lot to the scoreboard, its like saying his jersey is always lovely and clean when he comes off, irrelevant. Anyway enjoy the Christmas holidays I suspect you've started early, roll on 2017. duckula20 (Antrim) - Posts: 175 - 14/12/2016 11:01:16 1940040 Link 0 |
Well why did you say over the last 12 months Bernard has done enough to warrant a place on the team. I can go get the post for you if you wish. If you don't give a rats about the last 12 months then don't bring it up.

Nostalgia might be playing a part here as well. The 2000's were a golden period for football IMO. You had two outstanding teams in Tyrone and Kerry, and a clutch of very good teams all capable of winning Sam like Armagh, Galway, Meath, Cork etc. battling it out at various times. It was fascinating looking back on it. It's nowhere near as competitive now, partly because Dublin have raised the bar a notch, and partly because all of the above have fallen away a bit for various reasons.
