These lists are always painful. All about opinion. It ain't a bad team in fairness but at the end of the day who cares what Spillane says? Man Connolly is the greatest footballer to every play the game ffs he's an automatic choice. Fenton is the poty hasn't lost a game he's started for Dublin he's two all stars he's the most outstanding midfielder I've seen in years , he has it all pace, power , great fielder he's in on goal in nearly every big game he can't be stopped. Team of the century would go back to 1916. It looks more like the last 30 years, and is made up of All Ireland winners. No Down players from the 60'sfor example. There are good players in all counties, but they don't get the exposure of the more successful teams. Some one else could pick a team just as good. Brian Dooher was a fantastic player he was a different player to Alan Brogan and Connolly. He was a serious link man and a workhorse of the highest order. In my opinion he was the most important player in the Tyrone team even more than Sean Cavanagh was at the time as he did the dirty work and didn't want any plaudits only the success. Flynn had a poor year this year albeit with a very good final but I also would probably just have Dooher ahead of Flynn. If this team is made in 2020 I would expect Connolly , ROC and Brogan to be in it with Cian O Sullivan, Flynn and James McCarthy not far off" Excellent mature response. It's his team of THIS century, as in from 2000 to 2015 when he picked the team, so not much chance of any of the Down team from the 60's making it. I wouldn't have Michael Murphy on it.Talent wise he's brilliant but performance wise he's not up there.He's failed to fulfil his talent with a simlar level of performance. I's have Flynn on the team for about 4 years he was the most complete footballer in the country , tailed off a bit in the last 2 (although he finished 2015 very well). It's very hard to pick teams like this. I mean you'd imagine that Tomás Ó Sé is a shoe in at right half back but then you look at Lee Keegan's performances over the last few years and it is very hard to leave him out. That's just one example in one position. Anyone could pick at least 2, maybe even 3 or 4, teams that would be almost equally as good as each other. Yes he has the talent, but he is yet to deliver a major performance in an AI final, perhaps even a semi final, which is why he has never won player of the year. When a younger generation look back on AI finals from this Dublin team I don't think many will be convinced that he was one of the greats from what we've seen so far. I think he was referring to your claim of Fenton being POTY so leave the rats posteriors alone. Its still a little early to put some of these players on pedestals but they do have the potential to do what Kilkenny have in the hurling so we'll see. Regarding Fentons attribute of being through on goal nearly every game that doesn't add a lot to the scoreboard, its like saying his jersey is always lovely and clean when he comes off, irrelevant. Nostalgia might be playing a part here as well. The 2000's were a golden period for football IMO. You had two outstanding teams in Tyrone and Kerry, and a clutch of very good teams all capable of winning Sam like Armagh, Galway, Meath, Cork etc. battling it out at various times. It was fascinating looking back on it. It's nowhere near as competitive now, partly because Dublin have raised the bar a notch, and partly because all of the above have fallen away a bit for various reasons. You would imagine that given Dublin's recent achievements they are worth 3-4 places minimum, but looking at Spillane's team, there really was some magnificent players around in the 00's. Who get's picked where is down to opinion (and usually bias) after that. Nobody is right or wrong, and it's not worth getting upset over.
