I see that there is a football one done on another thread, so instead of upsetting that football crowd by adding a hurling team there, I deem it safer to create a new post.
Naming just 15 players is an extremely difficult task. However, I think that certain players are just nailed on: Nicky Quaid, JJ Delaney, Tommy Walsh, Kyle Hayes, Cian Lynch, Tony Kelly, Henry Shefflin, Joe Canning, TJ Reid, and Eoin Kelly of Tipperary. It is in picking the other five that the headache arises. But here it goes…
1. Nickey Quaid (Limerick)
2. Sean Finn (Limerick): Mick Kavanagh and Ollie Canning were also great.
3. JJ Delaney (Kilkenny): I hated leaving out the Rock, but I couldn't not pick JJ.
4. Jackie Tyrrell (Kilkenny): He gets it over Barry Nash but even Jackie acknowledges how great a corner-back Nash is. Ronan Maher another great operator.
5. Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny): To keep out Declan Byrnes is some going, but very few can compare to Tommy.
6. Padraic Maher (Tipperary): He shades it over Declan Hannon- two mighty no. 6s.
7. Kyle Hayes (Limerick): The best no. 7 I have seen since the late Denis Coughlan of Cork.
8. Cian Lynch (Limerick):
9. Tony Kelly (Clare): Mick Fennelly is another who is worth mentioning.
10. Gearoid Hegarty (Limerick): Eoin Larkin of Kilkenny came close.
11. Henry Shefflin: No argument.
12. Joe Canning: No argument, except what position to put him in. Tom Morrissey worth a mention.
13. Eoin Kelly (Tipperary): No argument for me.
14. Michael "Brick' Walsh (Waterford): Both Aaron Gillane and Seamus Callinan will have their supporters, but Brick was something else.
15. TJ Reid (Kilkenny): No argument. Brian Hayes (Cork) and Peter Casy (Limerick) also worth mentioning: Hayes not at in long enough, and Casey, although sheer class as well, is not just TJ.
John Conlon and Shane O'Donnell of Clare, Pat Horgan and Seamus Harnedy of Cork, Ken McGrath of Waterford, Brendan Maher, Brendan Cummins, and Noel McGrath of Tipp, Liam Rush of Dublin, Lee Chin of Wexford, Noel Hickey of Kilkenny, and Dan Morrissey of Limerick are other names that entered my head, as well as Daithi and David Burke of Galway.
An impossible task.
