Wexford Club Hurling 2026

Replying To zinny:  "I would agree it is harder to win both in the one year in the current format. The Anne's were the last to do it. But that said there was only a puck or a kick of a ball from the same two teams being in the final of both. The reality is Wexford has always been a dual code for 85% perhaps of the players and all of them want to keep it that way. Its the clubs job to provide pathways for their players by being a dual code it ensures more options are open. With the shels it has allowed players to focus at county level on one code and then come back to mix that experience with the other code at club level, that is a massive benefit."
And there's no mercy for being a proper dual county. The teams winning all Irelands aren't trying to do what we are and that's the reality.

Tbf, I do get that argument but I think it would be a lot stronger argument if we did a lot more GAA throughout the year in this county at club and school level and also in terms of lads just pucking the ball around

Like Good Counsel are probably closer to 50/50 than either Peter's or Enniscorthy CBS but they probably do as much hurling as either of them because they just do more GAA in general

Someone like Seán O'Brien has probably done a good bit of football with Counsel and Cushinstown but the big difference with him is what he does outside of training sessions and matches, he probably has the hurl in his hand 365 days of the year

If we get to the point where we have loads of lads in the county like him in terms of the hurling they do outside of training sessions and matches but the results for the county aren't significantly improving, then we can say being a dual county is a big issue

But I don't think we can blame our current situation on being a dual county

Replying To countyman2022:  "Bar Cushinstown, Annes and Cloughbawn, has any other club won a double comprising of both championships being intermediate or higher? How big an achivement is it actually? Was the championship structure straight knockout in 91 and 2000 and unlike the constant week on week now?"
Faythe Harriers won senior hurling and senior football in 1960.

And if you mean both championships being intermediate or higher, but not necessarily the same grade, don't forget that St. Martin's managed it as recently as last year (Senior Hurling, Intermediate Football).

Had it in mind that Fethard managed an intermediate double at one stage as well, but have just looked it up and turns out I'm wrong - they won the football in 1993, and the hurling in '94.

Have also looked up the programme from last year's Senior Hurling Final, and the bit about the St. Anne's Jubilee Team from 2000, and it tells how the championship was a straight knock-out that year all right. FWIW, Anne's beat Harriers in first round, Glynn-Barntown in quarter-final, Ferns in semi-final, and Oulart in the final. Football that year would have been straight knock-out then as well.

1991 had four groups of three in Senior Hurling, so I presume that Intermediate (which Cushinstown won) had the same, and that the football championships that year had the same too.

We were probably more of a dual county in the 50s when we reached 4 AI hurling finals winning 2 of them. In the same decade we reached 2 Leinster Football finals.

Goes to show what the Martins last year and Cloughbawn this year have actually achieved, Annes played 8 games to win a double then in 00 and Cushinstown played 10 in 91. The two teams last year and this year done 16 games in 17 weeks. Madness.

That's another way of looking at it.

St. Anne's 2000 won eight knockout matches. Cloughbawn 2026 only won six. :D

We need smaller groups. More jeopardy.

Smaller groups might help in Leinster club championship too. Crazy amount of games. I see cloughbawn lost conceding two late goals. They much be running on empty at this stage.

Think they have a better chance to be recovered for next weekend. Although the Village in Nowlan Park will be hard beaten.

Yes. Many people may have a certain view in general about a certain referee, but I don't think it shows the club in a great light to write that sort of letter. And happy to see I'm not the only one who spotted the inaccuracies.

I'd love to see them do it but without Conall Flood it's a big ask

The single code clubs are not the ones winning county titles in hurling either

Some valid points but doesn't paint the club in great light and screams arrogance .. however more concerning is how an email sent in good faith to wexford gaa was released to the public domain.
