Replying To Oldtourman: "In Fairness if they had the most skillful players in the country, they would be twenty years wothout an All Ireland. You have to prove that repeatedly on the field. By" Spot on, Oldtourman. Of course Cork have some very skillful players, but I wouldn't agree that they are the most skillful team. For years we were told that Cork club games were being refereed too strictly, and that, as a result, their players weren't able to deal with the physical stuff that was being allowed by inter-county referees. You certainly couldn't make that argument now. Not only are they well able to compete physically, they have a number of players who seem to like provoking their opponent. Cork may be no different to most other teams in this regard, but I would not accept that any lapses in discipline occur only when they are retaliating to provocation.

Some of the most skilful hurlers never make it at intercounty unfortunately.

It's ok to be physical and I like it, but losing a player in today's game is not on. Need 15 on 15 at all times, and even getting 2 yellows isn't too difficult. There'll be a lot of sending offs both in hurling and football, as we saw in Cork vs Kerry at weekend!

there is a fine line between aggression and over aggression, between showing you wont get pushed around versus indiscipline and giving away too many frees and having guys sent off
Limerick beat up other teams for years with their physicality. There was plenty of skill and they were tactically excellent, but physicality and aggression was part of it I think for Cork in particular the 2021 All Ireland left lots of scars when they were bullied of the field (as somebody who saw Limerick ship lots of heavy beatings at the hands of Cork down the years it must have been hard for Cork to stomach) Clare seemed to have hit a sweet spot in terms of aggression and not going over the edge and losing players to cards Cork have definitely become more physical (they have plenty of big men) and aggressive. But sometimes they go over and have lost players to red cards in big games. It must be a concern for their management but its easier to ratchet it than to build it up. And I dont think it isolated ill-discipline, I think its just a consequence of playing on the edge, and inevitably going over it. But with time they can improve I thought Tipp really stepped up in this regard on Sunday. Their tackling, the skirmish at the start. They drew some yellow cards but walked the line well and also didnt concede too many frees (Limerick only hit 6 points from frees and didnt miss too many).

Kilkenny must be pleased at the Munster teams knocking the hell out of each other. They'll probably reach the semis without bother, have 6 top class forwards, and will feel that this is their year!

I agree aggression and playing on the edge is needed certainly, but it is a delicate balancing act. In the last couple of years Limerick went from having it perfectly timed, to over doing it, to having to reign it back in because there was a perception that they were still overdoing it (when they were not). The most pleasing part of the Limerick v Tipperary match last week end for me was the return of the clean aggression from both sides particularly in the midfield and half forwards of both teams and no real dirty tackles or hits. Just two teams going at it for all their worth.

How is everyone feeling about this weekend?
Waterford emerge from the long grass in the first game. I think this has the ingredients to be the game of the Munster Championship so far. Waterford should have beaten Clare in Ennis last year, and in my opinion that can be added motivation for them (if playing All Ireland Champions at home is not motivation enough). Walsh Park is a tough prospect for any county to go there (and it will be the same for Limerick next weekend). Just looking at the Waterford team there are top class hurlers throughout and I think this could be a high scoring affair. Do Clare have an advantage having played last week (while Waterford haven't played in a few weeks) or will the effort Clare had to put into turning around a 12 point deficit in the second half, mean they could getting fatigues by the end of the match? I cant pick a winner
Cork and Tipp is interesting game. While you have to fancy Cork at home, with a huge crowd backing them, Tipperary are a different beast this year. Cork play with so much pace and movement/running off the ball its hard to keep it up for a full 70 mins. Tipperary were very impressive against Limerick in the tackle but there is a danger that such an effort could take a lot out of them and Cork would exploit and drop in energy levels. It feels like a free shot for Tipperary so I think the game will be very tight. I do think cork at home will do the business by 3 points

I believe the first game will have blown off the cobwebs and we will be in a better position starting Sunday. Cleary is a miss but I can't see Waterford getting the quality delivery into the full forward line that cork were able to in the first half to hurt us. That's not saying Waterford cannot win, but if we play to our potential we will win, that's my feel for it. Big Clare crowd travelling down Sunday

Clare certainly will be on a high. Those big men up front so good. The Waterford team named must be really in form because there is half a team of top players on the subs.

Two very interesting games this weekend..teams named look very strong..tipp going with same starters, thought they might have made a change or 2..cork have named Downey and Dalton in for Barrett..I thought tipp played very well last week but I'm expecting cork to win by possibly 6 points plus. I think Clare will be up to match tempo more than Waterford, however I do give Waterford a great chance in this..they have everyone available and bench looks really strong.. Cleary,Ryan and o Donnell are huge losses for clare..I'd expect a few positional switches with galvin named to start.. Could be a tough game for ref,as I'm expecting a very physical battle..Waterford should have beaten both tipp and Clare last year and I think one win could set them up for a great run. I fancy Waterford by maybe 3 points..great to be able to sit back and enjoy this weekend..

Galvin deserves a start, probably for McCarthy, and I would also like to see Shane Meehan finally given the nod in a big game, possibly for Rodgers. Meehan needs to be finally given a chance to shine as he undoubtedly has the talent. I am backing Peter Duggan to be our most important player this year, and also he is no mean talent on the frees either if asked to step in. Taking nothing from McCarthy and Rodgers, who would both surely come off the bench, the games come hard and fast at this time and a certain squad rotation is needed, even if just to freshen things up a bit. The Waterford game will be a very tough one. The physicality will be something else. I am really looking forward to it but it will be very difficult to come away from there with a win. Really Clare probably need to get four of the remaining six points on offer, and we just might have to take those off Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds (well capable) and Tipp in Ennis. Come on The Banner!

Replying To Canuck: "Agree. Definitely when the play went dead the game was over except there was deliberate time wasting. If that was the case the team captains should be told so and how much extra will be played. It was just two seconds short of two extra minutes from the official posted time to actually when the final whistle went. This is not fair to have this discretionary time in the hands of the ref when this decision may end up with a team being out. The clock and hooter would put and end to this with the clock running when the ball is in play." Fair play, Cannuck. I knew this would be a tough ask to get a result. Hopefully you can build on that now. I am still quite confident we can get out of Munster though :) Big game for us in the Gaelic Grounds next. Not sure what your next one is.
