I didn't say we don't want one. I said we should be getting our act together and making the necessary improvements anyway. With or without one.

Maybe I'm wrong but is this plan from 2022 working lads? We had a good under 20 team in 22 and 23 but other than that results have been very dissapointing. One good thing is I think we have more schools hurling Leinster A colleges next year which will expose more lads to that higher level of hurling.

Why do you think we have more schools hurling at a higher level in the 1st place? And our weaker schools are winning Leinster titles too, Kilmuckridge and Adamstown. If we weren't doing something right collectively at underage then those improvements wouldn't be happening. There seems to be something wrong between U16 and U20 ok, something we are getting wrong. At the same time last years minors beat Kilkenny and Cork convincingly. Just weren't consistent......sounds familiar? Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16680 - 25/07/2025 10:32:40 2627852 Link 0 |
Not being flippant but were our "weaker schools" beating any schools of substance? I don't like seeing also-ran comps being used to say that things are doing better. The ultimate proof of where we are at with underage is Fitzgibbon and schools A hurling. I don't think we are setting the world on fire, we had much less Fitzgibbon players in Wexford than previous. When I was in college we were playing Fitzgibbon against Wexford players in other colleges and had a good representation on our own. That seems to have dried up, and don't buy the "Carlow and DIT are not in it", the colleges would be recruiting our lads if they were good enough. What did it focus on? What was the target? Hard to say it is working when our county underage teams are losing badly, despite the minors beating Cork last year. But I say it before and say it again, clubs are development locations, county teams are finishing schools but hurlers are made in the garden against a wall of their house and parents don't seem to get this. I think far from root and branch reviews, this is the #1 problem in Wexford. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1450 - 25/07/2025 12:48:09 2627896 Link 0 |
''We aren't in debt, and have good income streams. Why do we need a sugar daddy? Nice though that would be.'' You literally said why do we need one!! For the exact reasons I said, lets get catch up with the benefit of one. countyman2022 (Wexford) - Posts: 863 - 25/07/2025 13:00:50 2627902 Link 0 |
Our u-15's just got hammered by Limrick. Our u-16's barely beat Antrim. Our u-17's lost in Championship 4 times. Our u-20's got beaten by Laois and trimmed by KK. Our minors last year very comfortably beaten by Clare. We are not doing much right collectively looking at these results.

There was probably a Leinster u20 title left behind us in 2023 for sure, not a great day for us in terms of decision making on the field or sideline - a familiar tale! Cork beat Offaly comfortably in the final so I wonder how strong our team really was. Very reliant on Cian Byrne up front. Conor Foley kicked on too and maybe we should be expecting more at senior level from a few more of them - Carley, CBD. But at least those teams were well managed under Rossi with plenty of go in them, the performances at that level in the last couple of years suggest anything but. I guess Tipp winning the AI this year should give every team like ourselves, Dublin, Waterford, Galway a boost. It starts with incredibly hard work and an objective of restoring pride in the jersey. Tipp were like ourselves this time last year, supporters had deserted them and they were going nowhere. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 437 - 25/07/2025 13:22:54 2627914 Link 0 |
I listened to the podcast there. The aim was to win an all Ireland by 2027, based on what? Also Martin keeps saying u17 is not about winning and more about developing the player. But come on surely we need to try win a minor all Ireland, 1968 is a long time. The plan needs to be tore up and looked at again because it isn't working. logger (Wexford) - Posts: 308 - 25/07/2025 14:21:21 2627928 Link 0 |
The minors last year were beaten by Clare by less than they beat Cork. And were 12 up in the 2nd half as far as I remember against Kilkennys minors before Kilkenny tacked on a few scores at the end. For the Clare game they warmed up on the side pitch, and looked nervous as hell. They then slipped over numerous times in the 1st half as the main pitch was completely different to the side pitch. Yes they lost pretty badly and didn't play well in that game, but that doesn't make them bad players altogether. And in any case minor success while nice in itself provides no direct indication how a SenIor team might go, Galway have won nearly half the AI minor titles won the last 20 years. You had a few poor games yourself, and the teams you played on had a few shockers. Neither of those things made you a bad player overall did they? I fully expect a good few off that minor team to play Senior if they keep improving, and Eoin Hughes and Paddy Quigley might be playing Senior before they finish at u20, if they keep their feet on the ground and stay working hard. The u15s are having a poor enough year so far, but reached a Tony Forristal A final last year that they were level with Kilkenny in going into injury time. I'm sure there will be some good players on that panel also. The u14s have already beaten Clare and Cork this year pretty comfortably. I'm not sure how good Antrim are at u16 this year, you obviously know more about them than I do. How did they get on against other counties? As regards the game itself I didn't see it so I didn't comment on it, I just pointed out that they won. And Bryson must be Hermione posting, being as they seemed to be able to be in 2 places at the same time. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16680 - 25/07/2025 14:36:37 2627931 Link 0 |
As regards Cork beating Offaly that year I think we would have given Cork a better game. Offaly were very small that year, and Cork physically bullied them off the ball. I think we might have been better able to take that treatment.

I literally said "why do we need one". Not that we wouldn't want one if there was one going. My point is that we should find and spend that money on the on-pitch things it needs to be spent on, rather than putting them all on the long finger until Batman appears to save us all.

The most successful colleges currently are in Limerick, Galway and Cork, plus DCU. We have had good representation on DCU teams the last couple of years, and the Cork, Galway and Limerick colleges tend to recruit locally. As regards getting 2 Wexford schools more competitive in Leinster PP A that's not something Wexford GAA can do much about. You would primarily need to take that up with the Dept of Education and Bus Eireann. Where in years gone by most of the best hurlers went to GCC or Peters if you look at the make up of our current underage development squads far more of them attend other schools. At the same time in fairness Peters are training more days of the week the last 2 years, and their 1st and 2nd year teams are much better for it. That Cork team also lost Ben O'Connor to Munster thereafter

Do the development squads keep the same coaching set-up as they go through the age groups or do the coaching staffs stay the same for each age group? ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 606 - 25/07/2025 15:42:41 2627953 Link 0 |
Neither

Neither happens every year. Some years lads go on with their teams, other years new lads come in.

What year did you go to college? Some of that is down to economics. When I was in UCD we had good representation as well, loads studying ag science. Is that still the case? Are more getting trades again rather than third level? You can't deny a large number of Wexford people go to dit and Carlow. We would always have had good numbers there but I suppose you are asking the right questions. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3849 - 26/07/2025 07:26:26 2628041 Link 0 |
