Replying To OpenStandWall:  "Heard Liam Ryan has torn his hamstring which is probably him out of most of the club championship also. Wouldn't be surprised if thats his race ran in a Wexford jersey, he owes us absolutely nothing if it is.

Just another thing from Saturday and most of the championship, we have a big problem at centre back, Reck is a fantastic natural hurler but is out of his depth there, I think it'd be worth trying Molloy at 6."
Would love to see Reck and Hearne in midfield

Replying To MyOhMi:  "Ryan is gone for KK game - tore his hamstring in training on Thursday night. KK won't really care less about next weekends game. A Wexford win won't even put a gloss on a terrible season. I'd imagine some lads have their bags packed for the US already. Can't see the Wexford Club Championship starting for at least another 5-6 weeks.

The minors hurled very well in second half - went out and played hurling and I think outscored Galway 13 - 6. Seem to be very fearful in the first half. Stood off Galway in the first half and let them do what they want. I think managers try to over complicate the game .. especially at underage. Some super performances though - especially Darragh Ryan and Joey Tobin. Tobin is still U16 but apparently not good enough to make a Good Counsel Senior team!!"
Club Championship starting date was announced ages ago. Unless the Footballers reach the TC final.
Ryan played much better further up the pitch. He isn't a centreback. Thought most of the forwards did pretty well in the 2nd half, when they finally had some ball after the reshuffle at halftime. Think Gethings is better at 6 than 3, and thought Kirwan did ok at 3. Back 6 all looked pretty good in the 2nd half, and should be let mark their men the next day, or maybe dropping back a lad a line and having Gethings as a spare man to launch attacks either.

Replying To Pikeman96:  "The potential start dates for the club championships were set out months ago. With the hurlers now gone, they'll start on the last weekend of June, unless the footballers reach the Tailteann Cup semi-final.

The weekends between now and then are taken up with the semi-finals and finals of the All County Leagues, followed by a rest weekend with no fixtures at all (the weekend when Féile takes place).

Other potential start dates for the club championships:
Footballers reach but lose the Tailteann Cup semi-final: will start weekend of Friday July 4 to Sunday July 6.
Footballers reach Tailteann Cup Final: will start weekend of Friday July 18 to Sunday July 20."
ACHL Semi Finals down for bank holiday weekend

Just on that wider point, do we have an issue with how we are producing specific types of players?

Who's the last top quality player we had specific to one position?

At 6 that's probably Rossi himself even though he spent a lot of his career corner or full back.

Do we need to be looking at picking lads for specific skills earlier? Some sort of accelerated talent system? Are we using the development squad system properly for this?

I know the core skills of the game are always the same but a hurling brain is so important for those key positions.

Not sure what the answer is but regarding a 6 I think its time to give Molloy a run there next year. I think Damien would cause defences a lot of trouble with forward runs from midfield.

Paudie Foley at 6?

Hasnt played for Wexford since 2022 I think and at the age of 31/32 are we not much better giving likes of Eoin Ryan, Darragh Carley, Richie Lawlor, Cian Molloy game time in the backs. I would love to see Oisin Foley back though

Certainly suited to the position but it's hard to call his time in a Wexford jerseys as a career. It was pretty short and he packed it in before his prime.

Liam will have to put himself first I think. To play at the top level you can't be carrying niggly injuries from year to year. To be honest I think you need some league games under your belt these days. Is it 5 games in 7 weeks in Leinster round robin? That's intense and no surprise Shane Reck and Ryan broke down again. Mac too has been struggling in recent seasons. Doesn't say much for our S&C setup either as injuries have been a problem for years now despite early exits from championships. So it can't be from playing too many games!

Of course we had a club championship that replicated this format pretty much but was too hard on players/clubs apparently.

No idea who our next 3 and 6 will be. Maybe second tier of league next year will help bed down newer lads. 1, 3, 6, 9, 11, 14 - little progress addressing the spine of the team this year.

Forgot to add Conor Foley to that list. Think we really need someone to step up and take the number 3 jersey hopefully Eoin Whelan gets over his injuries soon

Tbh I don't remember either Paudie or Keith playing that many games at 6 for us. Would it even be 20 between the 2 of them altogether in their intercounty careers? I doubt it.
Matthew O Hanlon was a good enough centreback for us it has to be said, Andrew Shore wasn't bad either. Skippy Ruth played some good games there, Darren Stamp too.
But you would probably have to go back to Liam Dunne since we had a really top of the range 6, before Damien came along. And he wasn't even 5'10".

Not going to beat ya when you are down lads but for me everything has to be on the table for Wexford to move forward.
Its all well and good saying "We were in this u20 final and that minor lost by a point", where are the players from those teams? Who made it from then?
As a county the excuses need to stop. Yes there was a howler of a refereeing decision v us, but you still had 20-25 minutes in that game to win it? It wasn't that goal for me, it was the one after it that beat you. You never shored up the back this year at all and your manager is a former full back. But the refrain was "the ref cost us". Where was the ****** off performance v Galway where the team were fuming about the injustice in PP the week before? Instead, they went out with a whimper when Galway were not even great.
I bet the minors were beaten before they left the dressing room yesterday, "We were without Sean O'Brien".
Its all a cop-out lads, as a county need to stop looking for excuses and instead when you get shafted by a referee or an injury its up to everybody else to step up and be men and redouble the effort? I feel in Wexford when these happen the heads drop and its woe is me is the vibe. That's when you need to say "F this we'll show them" as a team.
Like yesterday, if Wexford got the start Dublin got v Kilkenny I think you would have lost by 20 points. I don't like saying it but the do or die mentality is missing.
Stop with the "if this hadn't happened" or "we were unlucky" refrain and start using these as fuel.
You may stick with Rossiter because to be blunt lads, nobody is going to want the job.
I fear for Wexford and hate saying it given its where I live now but its all well and good winning the Tony Forristal or whatever but where are the 2-3 Adam Screeneys in that team and in every team and what are Wexford doing to turn them in to top players?
Paying development coaches top money for me has to be a priority for Wexford, any coach worth anything is involved in a club team and cashing in.
Hurling in schools needs to become a priority, do schools use astroturf facilities to promote the game?
And lads, forget about 1996 and emotional speeches and Liam Griffin and Larry O'Garman singing Dancing at the Crossroads. Its cringey, it'll be 30 years ago next year. The game has moved on from that sort of thing, unfortunately I don't feel Wexford have.

Why do the clubs keep voting for this format then?
As regards those positions I agree to a point.
1- we need a new 1, Mark is getting on, whether you love him or hate him. Of the younger, early 20s, keepers Cian Byrne looked the best underage, though I think Paddy Quigley is an excellent teenage prospect if he keeps developing.
3- Dara Kehoe is our best aged early 20s prospect there I think, but got injured playing Fitzgibbon. Of the younger, teenage, lads I think Eoin Hughes is an excellent prospect.
6- I'm not someone who thinks Damien is bad there, but he might be better at midfield, alongside Hearne. We haven't had a really good 6 underage in a while, since Patsy tbh, maybe Eoin Whelan could be looked at there if he's fit next year? I still think Ian Carty would be our best man there who is in the mid-ish 20s age bracket, but he's in Oz. I don't see any really outstanding teenage 6s, though Ciaran Gethings is ok and might develop. Darragh Ryan isn't a 6.
9- Damien Reck. Conor Foley, or Rowley if not played at 11, our best in the early 20s age group, though David Codd is good too.
11- I think we have some good lads coming through at this position, Jack Redmond if he keeps improving, then of the younger lads Roche is ok, Rowley could make an excellent 11 in time, and Sean O Brien and Darragh Ryan both have the makings of a good 11 of the minors. Rory probably the best of the midish 20s lads for 11.
14- all of the 11s above could probably make a good 14 if they develop more, though Rowley, O'Brien and Ryan would probably be better at 11.
So next year for the 1st League game if everyone is fit and with an eye to the next 3 years-
1- Byrne
3- Kehoe
6- Carty if home, Reck or maybe Whelan if not.
8- Hearne
9- Reck if he isn't 6, Conor Foley or Codd or Rowley otherwise.
11- Redmond or Rowley, but probably Rorys position for Championship.
14- Redmond or maybe Roche.
Bearing in mind we will need some experience in every line if we realistically want to get promoted back up again.

Pretty harsh outlook overall but with lots of truth in it I think.

1. We need to keep highlighting getting shafted, bit not hide behind it or use it as a reason to stop trying to improve the thing's we can control. You're right. We needed a reaction against Galway and didn't get it.

2. The heather blazing stuff is part of who we are. We need it. But it shouldn't be all of who we are. No good neon the gallant losers.

3. I agree about conversion of players. We fall down badly at minor and we have to do something about it. I'm not surprised you find that cringy. With the greatest respect, Dublin do not have that culture.

In terms of the minors/20s it's too early to say who's made it. They are only coming of age now. Next year's league is where we need to be testing as many of them as possible.

I'm not as pessimism about who wouldn't replace Rossi. I love him. I really do. But some of the failings this year are unforgivable. Selection, tactics, coaching, indecision, maybe he gets one more year but I actually think it's crisis point right now.

Wexford county board is financially very healthy. I'm not worried about us attracting a manager at all. Their target would be promotion in the league and consolidating Leinster while building a new panel. That is very achievable.

I would be watching JJ Doyle and the harriers very closely this year.

Finally I get what you mean about how Dublin responded to kk. If it happened us against any other county you may be right but not Kilkenny. They got a start like that in 23 and we came back and won.

I think it's unlikely too that he comes back and would rather we build around Molloy at 6 anyway but the point I was trying to make was that he was the last true centre-back we had for all that he didn't really play there for that long

Cian Molloy, Conor Foley, Eoin Ryan, Cian Byrne, and Richie Lawlor from those two U20 sides have started multiple Championship games for us and Darragh Carley started on Saturday so I'm not really sure about your point that the players aren't coming through. Only county with more starters from that age group than us right now is Offaly and that's because they had little ahead and little behind that superstar crop of Minors/U20s
