Any Interest in a Paris Olympics forum?

Ireland are sending its biggest team ever with a 133-person team, across 14 sports.

Ireland have some real big hopes for medals. I feel the max we could get would be 15 medals but that would be unbelievable. 10 medals would be great. Anything over 6 would be a success for Team Ireland.

The 15 medal hopes.

Athletics (3 medals) Womens 400m, Mixed 4x400m and Womens 1500m. 4x400 all depends if Rhasidat Adeleke runs in it.
Rowing (4 Medals) LW Doubles, Womens Pairs, Mens Double Sculls and Mens Pairs.
Boxing (2 Medals) Kellie Harrington and Aoife O Rourke. Anything can happen in the ring we could have more or none at all here.
Swimming (2 Medals) Daniel Wiffen in the 800m and 1500m. Daniel a cert to bring home two medals.
Pommel Horse (1 Medal) Rhys McClenaghan. Massive chance at gold here.
Golf (1 Medal) Anyone of the 4 golfers could bring home a medal.
Rugby 7s (1 Medal) The Mens have a great chance.
Show Jumping (1 Medal) outside chance of 1 medal.

In athletics the global depth at 1,500m is incredible, so it'd be a monumental achievement for Ciara Mageean to medal. Gold is essentially sewn up with Kipyegon. Then there's a group of Ethiopians, Hull from Australia and Laura Muir who have all been running very well in recent weeks.
Rhasidat has a better chance. Miller-Uibo is not a contender now and two of the fastest 400m flat runners, McLaughlin and Bol will be running the 400m hurdles only as an individual event. Paulino is the favourite there. The medals are up for grabs.
Mixed relay possibly a medal, but it will depend on how strong the likes of the US and Holland go for that event.
I think the rowers and Daniel Wiffen are the closest we have to certs for medals. Barring disaster, they'll be getting medals of some colour.
A lot of the others are decent to strong possibilities. McCleneghan has all the potential to win it, but in an event like his, one slip in the final and it's all over.
Looking forward to it greatly. Go n-éirí leo.

I've never understood why professional golfers and rugby and soccer players are even allowed to compete at the Olympics. It would however be nice for amateur players to repreent their cojntry inm those sports, instead of letting the pros hog everything. And anyway, in all of those professional sports, the prestige competition, the one that matters, is not the Olympics. I could rattle off who won world cups in e.g. soccer, but I don't know which professionals won soccer Olympics, and I don't care either. Totally different for athletics etc, where the Olympics is the blue riband event; and for me I'd also have an interest in seeing amateur national soccer teams compete. They wouldn't be great, but it'd mean the world to them. It means very little to a pro.

I'd be much more confident about the boxing prospects. Is and always has been our primary Olympic sport.

I'd fancy 1 gold, 1 silver and possibly 3 bronze.

The level of our athletes has been slowly but surely improving over the last number of Olympic cycles. The centres of excellence have been a big part of this. Abbotstown Complex, Skibb for the rowing etc.

In athletics, funding for coaches was introduced (baby steps but important steps).

Even if we get zero medals, the fact that we have so many legitimate contenders is an amazing progression from where we were.

Most of these are amateur and get very little funding (and almost zero recognition!). They are a credit to the country.

Looking forward to it as well. Wiffen has a good chance but hard to know for sure given that a lot of his main medal competition didn't compete at the Worlds.

There's top level pro athletes in most of the sports.
Basketball has many nba teams and they really want to win. Look at USA and dream teams
Rugby 7s changed its world cup to shoe importance of the Olympics.
Saying olympics means very little to pros is a huge generalisation even in some sports. Look at andy Murray after he won medal in 2012.

Yeah but in soccer there's more than enough elite competition as it is for the pros. Sure isn't there even a legal case being prepared at the minute against FIFA for the demands the pros are being put under.

I recently watched Sprint on Netflix. The competition between the Jamaican and American sprinters is fierce! The Italian lad that won the 100m in the last Olympics - I still don't know how he won it!

Italian and Greek sprinters winning!! You'd have a fair idea all the same. Jamaica seem to be world-class at masking, not many get caught. USA sprinters are caught doping far more regularly than Jamaicans, which no doubt 'fuels' some of the fierce competition that you speak of.

And the Olympics is under 23s in soccer with a few exemptions. Think squads can have 3 overage players.
It isn't a full international tournament.

Ah yeah forgot about that. But even those u23 players have more than enough competition as it is. Maybe the attraction is not all of them go on to be full "proper" internationals?

Anyway, some farce between Argentina and Morocco yesterday. The Argentina equaliser that waa disallowed was hilarious!

Your man Noah Lyles will surely win in this time.

The Enhanced Games are planned for next year. Some people have little to be doing if they think this is a good idea. For these Olmpics, I don't know why, but I love watching the BMX races.

RTE has blanked out all Olympic Games coverage in the North including all news and sports bulletins. This means that the families of Irish athletes from the North won't be able to see them on the Irish broadcaster. This is totally ridiculous.

RTE don't have the rights to broadcast the Olympics in the North. BBC hold those rights.

Always the bitter word blaming those baddies down South. Now I know this doesn't fit your grand narrative but it is not RTE's fault in this instance. They wanted to show Games in the the 6 counties but the rights to show Olympic footage in NI belong to the BBC.
