I thought Fenton got a hand to it until I saw it last night. Brilliant block. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7978 - 17/06/2024 15:06:37 2552397 Link 0 |
Regardless of whether it was a foot or **** block by Fenton, O'Donaghue shouldn't be giving him an opportunity like that. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13796 - 17/06/2024 15:08:01 2552398 Link 1 |
He blocked it with his left calf. Didn't realise players are allowed stick a leg out to block shots so long as the boot isn't involved

Fully agree . Ryan had a great game but he should have seen the block coming. I am absolutely stunned at the lack of understanding of the foor block rule by the Sunday Game live comentators though. It was 100% a foot block . If they dont see that as a foot block then I dont what they would consider a foot block. Now I wouldnt be looking for a card for it , but definite free. Fenton was smart about it though , he put his hands out to block but the bottom line he threw his legs across the trajectory and was within distance to be dangerous. No doubt. But its roundabouts and swings Mayo got a 45 that never was and a free that never was late in the game to give them 2 points.

Good God almighty a great hard game of football and some are whining about a couple of calls each way. Best game of the year so far. A draw was a fair result. Mayo will probably be the most disappointed in not winning left some easy scores slip by. Best reffed game in a long time. The ref was consistent & didn't get involved to much. Also the players made it easy to ref, hard but fair from start to finish. cluichethar (Mayo) - Posts: 523 - 17/06/2024 15:28:26 2552405 Link 1 |
Let's ignore Fenton cleaning out O'Donoghue, and don't tell me it was a good challenge.

You are wrong actually. It was a penalty. You think there is a rule allowing a tackle with the leg, accidental or not?

I thought McHugh did a great job on Fenton, clearly got under his skin as Fenton seemed to put more energy into whinging to the ref and linesmen than actually playing the game. BlastCalyle (Mayo) - Posts: 216 - 17/06/2024 16:42:21 2552434 Link 2 |
Not sure it was the best game of the year so far. Good game alright but there has been some great games this year. Up there with Donegal Derry, Tyrone Cavan the Ulster final, Cork and Kerry etc. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 351 - 17/06/2024 16:56:54 2552437 Link 1 |
I've just quoted you the rule from the rule book. The ball actually hit his butt or upper thigh. If that's a penalty for an intentional boot block then I give up. He actually kicked the ball into the back of Fenton's legs. Penalty? Nah, don't think so.

He didn't tackle him. He threw his body in front of the ball, O Donoghue kicked him

How was it a foot block when Fenton was hit in the ass with the ball? The rule literally says, block with the boot. It may as well have hit Fenton in the crown jewels, it's as far away from his boot. Maybe the rule needs to be changed to say any part of the body from the waist down. Other interesting fact about that rule is that it only applies if the opponent is kicking from the hands. That wasn't the case yesterday but it must be one of the most misunderstood rules in the game.

They have met 2 of the same teams Dublin met - and kerry have been a lot more impressive in both....

I never said it was a foot block i don't know why everyone is obsessed with that part, but you can't cut across a player and make no contact with the ball while he is in the process of shooting? Is that not what happened?

No the referee was correct actually and was only a couple of metres away. There was no tackle with his leg or otherwise. Fenton is stretching both hands forward to attempt a block and O'Donoghue kicks the ball against the back of Fenton's leg. No foul play.

The ref didn't get involved…? Did he not over rule a perfectly good call by the umpire to give Mayo a 45 to level the game late on… The ball was clearly wide… the umpire saw it and waved it wide… Mayo played very well and deserved something out of the game but the referee was poor….

It wasn't a foot block. BlastCalyle (Mayo) - Posts: 216 - 17/06/2024 19:59:36 2552505 Link 0 |
Fenton blocked O'Donoghue from kicking with his left calf. There's a crystal clear photo on sports file. If he had dived on O'Donoghues boot hands first there would be no issue. However he put his leg across to block the kick. That's a clear foul. Also O'Donoghue clearly was kicking from his hands so not sure what your point is there?
