Well what is the record for a Connacht Football Final. We have had 27,000 in Limerick for a Munster Football, v Kerry in 2004 and about the same in Killarney for the replay. Actually we were the only team to give Kerry a decent game that year and our boys did it twice. However, the two Connacht Refs did give anything that was going to Kerry, but they were marginally a better team anyway, as winners always are. I would admit however that Hurling will always get a bigger following in Limerick. I remember back in 2001 when our U21 Hurlers played Wexford in Thurles. There was a recorded attendance of 34,000 and the place was rocking. The following year an even bigger Limerick crowd went to Thurles for the Three in a row attempt against your own county and the crowd was only 19,000. I remember Martin Brehony lambasting his fellow Galway fans for their non attendance and he complained bitterly that the Galway support seemed to be outnumbered twenty to one by Limerick fans. I attended a Limerick Tyrone Under 21 Football AIF in 2002 in Mullingar and there seemed a to be a fine Limerick following there that day. To paraphrase yourself 'don't worry about the Limerick support it's of no concern to you'

As you know yourself there's no better supporters than us and you to come out if we get any chance of success! Even Offaly and Cork didn't draw 34000 this year.

Many start going becoz of the kids. A few years back when Limerick were going to defend their 2018 title, an old friend of mine said about his son, 'Would you believe it, Jack is even going to hurling games, now?' Jack, a man of forty never had interest in hurling before that. Why was he suddenly going, now? Because Jack's son bothered him to take him to the games because all the kids in school were going because Hannon or whatever players had visited the school with the McCarthy Cup. See, success breeds success. I wouldn't label Jack as a bandwagoner. Indeed, from what I know of the man, he'd probably prefer to be off fishing on a Sunday, like many still do up around the Corrib, than supporting the county hurlers. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2347 - 26/06/2023 19:35:30 2489778 Link 0 |
Congrats to Galway. We have a free shot in the semi, nothing to lose. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1759 - 26/06/2023 20:06:50 2489789 Link 1 |
All your are doing there in reinforcing the bandwagon that exists in Offaly. They travelled because they bought they had a chance at a result. How many of those Offaly fans were at the annihilation by Tipp last week?

Ourselves and V Clare have been drawing huge crowds to Munster Finals going back to the seventies and remember our combined population is only about a little more than half than of Cork alone

Im thinking Morrissey to 6 with Richie coming in to corner back and Mike Casey going full. Our half backs have been the winning of many a game and I'm not sure if he'll want to go a full match with Hayes in the Center but whatever call JK makes will be the right one.Hannon a massive loss not just for his playmaking and positional sense but he also seems to be the guy that controls others around him. Who takes on the on field leadership role without him. I'm thinking WOD rather than Cian Lynch looks like a leader of men and he's another guy that could do a job back there too if needed and has played that role before. If Wod filled in would Cian be fit enough to play his old midfield role again or I also wonder if he might challenge Peter Casey for his role as the outfield corner forward as it would be hard to drop Reidy after his performance in the Munster final. I'm not sure if they'll worry too much about special marking for Whelan, their focus will be on closing down space back there and not giving time for a good supply of quality ball going in. In 2010 during the players strike Limerick had only 1500 in PUC for the championship

Of course you'll get huge crowds when next door neighbours meet in a provincial final e.g Galway v Mayo in the football or Meath v Dublin when Meath had a great team. Limerick hurlers do get great support and fair play to them but don't belittle or judge other counties on their support or lack of it. There are various reasons why people may not be able to travel. In Galway we have both codes going strong and the Galway ladies are also competitive in both codes. There is the issue of travel, time and cost. Going from Clare or Limerick to either Thurles or the Gaelic Grounds is a relatively short trip, that's not the case if you're from west or north Galway and the game is on in KK, Wexford or Dublin. baire (Galway) - Posts: 1849 - 27/06/2023 09:48:02 2489874 Link 1 |
I hear you Baire. We are a long way from anywhere down here too. When driving to Salthill we had been on the road an hour before we even reached Kilkenny.

12 months before Limerick won an All-Ireland when it was clear as the nose on your face they had a great team coming who were going to do great things, and only 19k at a Munster semi final? Where have the other 30k come from?

I hear what you are saying and you are right, the mindset down here is just a little different among the masses whether there is success or not. I would say following a team like Galway or KK would be well worth the extra hour in the car imo when you are talking a handful of championship games over a year and some of them will be at home. I probably started this conversation and i don't mean to belittle or judge counties supporters I was more coming from a place where there is judgement on Limerick fans and i was looking to point out a few truths which is a little petty on my end so i am going to apologise and I'm in hurling only talk mode from now on. Looking forward to a match that could be epic and no one can really call which way its going to go.

This is the point. Its easy for 30-40k people to go to a game less than an hour away. Its a different kettle of fish for Galway and the other counties in Leinster playing Galway. Its the equivalent of Limerick or Clare playing in Antrim, how many would go then? Its the "oh we're great fans, look at us" which is so prevalent from my odd drop-ins to this board which is loathsome. I remember going with my father to Limerick to an All-Ireland Qualifier in about 09-10 and there was a tiny crowd at it. Will find the year tomorrow. Anything which raises the profile of the game is good, but being totally condescending to other counties and their support - especially when matches are hundreds of km away versus a match on your doorstep - just because you are enjoying success and have a bandwagon in full steam is unfair.
