Up to now, Jim Gavin has operated in logical contexts - military, air traffic control, top-level sports management - all contexts wherein you crunch the data and you formulate the best strategy, and you interact only with other committed and serious people, and the best strategy tends to win out. Contrast that with politics where you're mainly dealing with idiots and where spoofing and tabloid perception and b/s beat logic and hard work all day long. It does not surprise me that a quiet bloke who has always essentially liked working hard in the background didn't like it. Even without this rent issue, he was miles behind in the polls, and gave every appearance of not enjoying the campaign. Can't say I blame him - no job is worth being a public figure, especially nowadays. Horrible life points50swiththeargyllsonthewrongfeet (Tyrone) - Posts: 319 - 06/10/2025 17:00:35 2638711 Link 4 |
Hold on a minute.... there's lots of idiots walking amongst us, at all levels of society not just in politics. And funny enough, it is possible to formulate a strategy to win an election using data and assemble a winning team around you to do that, would you believe. I like Jim Gavin but as this campaign has gone on, he has shown to be incredibly nieve when it comes to politics. At the end of the day he let himself be put forward so I don't really have much sympathy for him & if you are going to go down the political route, you better have a clean past to start with as there's no mercy if you don't. Even without the rent issue, he was struggling to put across why he would make a good president and the polls proved that, last out of the three. Well said.

Are you suggesting that freethinker does not allow others here, the joy of free thinking? :-) slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6585 - 06/10/2025 19:06:35 2638737 Link 3 |
One would imagine that ending a rental, and discontinuing to incur the associated rental cost, falls well under the umbrella of 'logical context'.

I agree with you completely, but with all that in mind what possessed him to run for it in the first place. An intelligent fella with a good career, but with his personal life out of the media's eye as it should be. To give that up to be thrown into all that nonsense. I wouldn't do it for any money.

Lest there be any more confusion or obfuscation, I really don't care what anyone thinks of me one way or the other. Thankfully we still live in a society where we can express our opinions, whether others agree with them or not. I see many good, even classy posts on here, and I enjoy reading them, while others just troll. So be it. If people don't agree with whatever I say, that's fine. I don't do cranky. If there are grumpy old men on here, best of luck to them. So, live and let live , no ?

No harm at all. Fun to laugh at. Passes the time away i suppose. Everyone deserves a say not just him.

Jim Gavin's name will still be on the ballot paper despite him dropping out, this farce gets even funnier. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3480 - 07/10/2025 10:03:24 2638790 Link 0 |
Surely referring to other people who post here as 'bots' or 'trolls' is at conflict with your second & eighth sentences above?

I think the whole country should vote Jim Gavin number 1 now seeing as he's still going to be on the ballot paper, just to complete this total farce of an election. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3480 - 07/10/2025 10:23:36 2638794 Link 0 |
Just heard his name stays..oh my god what a joke..what happens with transfers if he receives the number 1 or are all these ballot papers invalid? CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2604 - 07/10/2025 11:03:47 2638801 Link 1 |

This has only happened in 2 cases. One is from - to me, a Mr T Bot with a Galway connection, trumpeting in capitals everything that could be found on Mr Ts achievement and the other was a start up one with a Clare connection pushing MrTs new found interest in world peace. I wasn't the only poster who found these "odd". I simply refused to engage with them, although one took a few digs at me afterwards. So, if these are construed as funny, or denying free thinking, so be it. Given the current direction of America's domestic, fiscal and foreign policies, and their effect on the rest of the world, I reserve the right to ignore anything that promotes this man's agenda or applauds it. As I said, if people find this amusing or funny, nothing I can do about that, or are my dear departed mother used to say " they are easily amused"

Killingfields does that mean he can still win the election even though not standing? CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2604 - 07/10/2025 13:00:38 2638821 Link 0 |
Well you received the most "likes" on this current page so you're not the only one that noticed. Well done. : )

Re: Michael McDowell, I don't think he has the personality to get elected president, and it is really a personality contest. In fact if we look closely at the leading politicians in Ireland, most have been involved with Parties since University or maybe earlier, groomed to become perfect political personalities, its difficult for a normal person to make an impact with one of the big parties. I actually think the legal system in Ireland needs a major revamp, as its badly outdated and often is too vague. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1485 - 07/10/2025 13:17:09 2638827 Link 0 |
It definitely does. The court system is an inefficient juggernaught. The District court is like a circus anywhere you go.

I think that Alan Shatter attempted that during the Trouka years.
