NEW YORK (AP) - Apple announced Monday that it plans to invest more than $500 billion in the United States over the next four years, including plans to hire 20,000 people and build a new server factory in Texas.

The move comes just days after President Donald Trump said Apple CEO Tim Cook promised him that the tech giant's manufacturing would shift from Mexico to the U.S. Trump noted the company was doing so to avoid paying tariffs. That pledge, coupled with Monday's investment commitment, came as Trump continues to threaten to impose tariffs that could drive up the cost of iPhones made in China."
Apple are investing in AI technology in the US but they're not moving any manufacturing from Mexico to the US. They sub-contract to suppliers in Mexico. Neither they nor Trump will lose an opportunity to spin out a bit of publicity here. Trump claiming what Cook said and Cook getting that past Apple aren't the same thing.

As someone who has worked in the health service for almost 50 years in a major hospital in the west of ireland I wonder who you prpose to replace the non irish or even non European workers that are now working there leaving medical and nursing aside the cleaning catering security portering and h.c.as are almost all non national because irish people won't do those jobs even though they are well paid

I'm afraid our friend doesn't really care about facts or numbers. Some people just repeat what they pick up from their chosen "news" outlets. There is no nothing to be gained in pointing out anything that doesn't align with their beliefs. You'll be accused of being "woke" - a much used and abused term - and mostly by people who don't fully understand what the word means. It's a catchall phrase to them to help drive their agenda. I'm not saying that our Galway friend is one of these, but he has an amazing grasp of the Trump teams facts and figures for the last 8 yrs, what Mr T is promising - and an insight into where the cause of all our travails are. Anyone that well versed in the geopolitics of the "western world" surely has to be listened to - no ???

That question re the employees is a little bit like just asking, ever so humbly, how Apple intend getting a plant designed and built and recruiting 20k staff for it in a 4 yr timeframe. I know the building bit would be impossible here in 4 yrs. planning and prelims would take longer than that. I realise things might move a bit faster in the States.

Fair point but Apple don't need to to pay for all of the build. They can partner with other companies to get manufacturing and other facilities built. Their partners share some of the risk. Their stuff is a bit overpriced for me.

Trump has also touted bringing back big pharmaceutical operations to USA. Companies like Merck, Pfizer and Regeneron have big investments in Ireland, and the probability of them relocating is about the same as coal mining returning to West Virginia!

Long-term the EU will eclipse Russia militarily, it already has economically and in population terms.

Yet nobody focused in the EU as a block in Top 10 economy lists, instead preferring to list individual EU states in the top 10.

I don't think there is any real need for Russia to feel intimidated by the EU though, because I think its possible for both to have a long-term relationship that allows both to grow and be strong, without impeding on each other.

I would like it if the doom and gloom merchants in RTE stopped trotting out spokespersons to tell us how worried we should, or could be in the face of impending tariffs. They've been at this now since Mr T took office - and before the election. We probably will be hit by some and suffer somewhat - then again, we may not. I'm quite sure that contingency plans are being made and have been made by companies and entities which are most likely to be affected by any tariffs. If there ever was a nation with the ability to talk ourselves into a recession, it's us. RTE just love to pick out the negative or down side of any impending challenge, be it economic, international or political. Clare Byrne is increasingly looking like a good fit as Joe's replacement.

That's a point I've always been making to people too, Trump and all his antics is a great smokescreen to deflect from the shortcomings of our own leaders and how they've failed the people of this country. But sure, let's all just keep obsessed with orange fella...

RTE in this case are correct, the Pharma's are already putting fiscal defensive mechanisms in place. A two way tariff system expected, as in raw materials from the States taxed and finished product to the states taxed, a two way tax system, I am not worried but a bit concerned about head count.

I'm beginning to think that our "Galway" friend has an agenda and I'm not sure it has a lot to do with our "national games". A lot of stuff is seeping out that looks suspiciously like what the "alternative outlets" are spouting.

I think we need to be realistic here.

1. Vladamir Putin is 72 years old, consistently during his reign he has eliminated any rival who could potentially step into this role as leader, there are no equivalent leaders waiting in the wings to take over from him, not even the heads of different departments under him are leaders like him, nor will there be any allowed. With no serious leadership alternatives, I predict Russia will face serious internal feuds and splits as different factions try to take control at that point.

2. The EU has ~450 million people, the worlds 2nd largest economy after the US. Russia has ~135 million people, economically it is very weak, not even in the Top 10 economies in the world, within which the EU has 3 members states, not including the EU. Russia currently is a top 3 military superpower, but longer term it is destined to fall down the global military pecking order, as it won't be able to deliver the sustained spending needed to maintain that military standing. The EU is starting to look at collective EU defense force, which will likely become a top 2 or 3 force in time.

3. Russia doesn't have the desire or the means to invade the EU, keep in mind that Ukraine kept them at bay for 3 years now simply from receiving weapons from the EU and US. Russia can't be seen to be weak when NATO is considering membership to a Country who eastern border surrounded key Russian naval bases. They are the largest Country in the world in terms of land area, but the real threat to Russia is China, who longer-term supposedly want a big chunk of Siberia.

So true. I wonder would some Irish people be as belligerent about immigration if their sick child needed emergency medal attention from a Filopino nurse, or God forbid, a Syrian doctor?
