Looking at the statement it doesn't actually say he has retired. It says he is stepping away for the coming season. Telling in my eyes.

It's a strange one. You would think with the new rules this year might suit him? But maybe it's something to do with management?

Do you think if there was a different Mayo manager in charge, this decision (stepping away or retirement) would not have happened.?
Still young enough and lots to offer a Mayo team imo.

I will just post again rather than reply separately lads if that's ok. Cillian is without doubt past his best and has had multiple injuries in the past few years so no guarantee he would be a starter.

My overall point here is that unless there is a revised statement then he is saying he is opting out this year rather than retiring. Taking a year out at this stage of his career would be very strange considering his injury profile and the little time he has left. His brother is obviously a huge part of the Mayo set up so if there is a problem with management it obviously isn't wholesale.

I think he would be annoyed at not getting more game time last year and i would say he is right to be in that regard. Still a serious finisher if he has the right players around him.

Fenton retiring at 31, O Connor stepping away for a year at the age of 32 and Murphy returning at the age of 35. Everything is gone a bit mad
I doubt if Cillian will return. He had a good run when he was in his prime but injuries have taken their toll and he is not the player he was. He will hardly return. Any reason why Aidan Orme and FionnMC Donagh have stepped away

Cillian might not be the only Mayo player stepping away.

Mayo county board only themselves to blame for sending out a questionnaire to the players and asking if they were happy with the current management not long after a last 16 exit in the championship.

He's only a few months older than Shane Walsh to be honest think it's prob time to move on from him anyway football wise he's huge mileage put in

Ohora also would probably have moved on from anyway.

mayo nvr short of good quality backs

O'Hora gone now. Others not confirmed. If Cillian was talking a year out to travel or due to work commitments then that would have been stated. It's a massive two fingers to the current management setup. Mayo won't be doing anything in 2025. Relegation from Div 1 wouldn't be a shock. Backwards we are going.

I assume O'Connor met with management and wasn't happy with what he was told in terms of the game time he was likely to see in 2025? Would that be the general feeling?
