Why didnt Mayo target the Roscommon goalkeeper who spent the day messing with the ball and wasting time. In league game in Ballybofey O Shea attacked Donegal keeper every time he had the ball and had great success with that tactic . The Rossies keeper was suspect with ball possession and should have been tackled every time but on the day Mayo players didnt lay a hand on any Roscommon player.

Typical...
Do we want to go down the road of soccer fans.
Next thing we'll be fighting at the terraces.
For me, the essence of sport is to cheer on your own team. When mis-fortune falls on opposition you can celebrate internally but show dignity externally.
Look at golf. Players celebrate landing a putt. But you never see anyone dancing around when the opponent misses.
Its called sportstmanship...and dignity.

Neither are Derry and Mayo are better than Derry. Mayo could be in the Championship closer to your Marching season than Derry

Unfortunately booing has become normalised with younger fans where they see it in every game of soccer. The reality is most watch soccer and it is seen as something fans do. I don't know how you stamp it out. It is not unique now to any one county.

Maybe I am too narrow minded. I know every county is at it now to some extent.
But I find it disgusting.
Why do we have to mimic soccer? Could we not mimic rugby instead.? .or behave like we used to in GAA

Mc Stay is a shrewd operator and I have a notion he wasn't too bothered by this defeat, they had a great league campaign and now they can get ready for group stages while giving time for any injuries to clear up etc,
I think winning the league and then turning the focus to the group stages was on his mind more than battling Galway again to win a provincial title that won't make a whole of difference when you get to the last 16.
The real big games won't come until we get down to the quarter finals knockout stage.
As David Brady said Mayo only bring the Ferrari out in Summer time, she broke down before the finish line though too often.
Don't be surprised if Mc Stay has them better prepared to win the whole thing this time though. the playing field has levelled up, any one of 5 or 6 teams has a real shout now of winning Sam.

"Your marching season"?? What a stupid, ignorant comment. 32 County Association?? I wonder sometimes.

Ray Boyle the former Dublin stats man had a very interesting stat from the weekend. Mayo's half time tackle count was 31 to Roscommons 46. The Mayo turnovers were also way down on the average across the league.

Now you could argue Mayo were not let play or that the intensity was way down. Personally I thought we were lifeless and tired and if you are at this level you're going to be beaten.

Roscommon brought fight and intensity but I actually don't think it was the greatest performance from them and I've seen them play better. That's properly a good place for them to be facing Galway next as they know they can improve and will need to.

Mayo need to rediscover top gear and have 6 weeks to do so.

That's an interesting stat, but I'd also be interested to see the corresponding time in possession stats. The team with less possession will generally be making more tackles.
There's no doubt that Roscommon seemed to tackle with more aggression, however.

Good display Saturday, didn't think they would be able to go down to Kerry and come away with a win.
Wouldnt be getting too excited after it though, its just 2 points and now focus on next two games and hopefully finish top to avoid prelim quarter final. Louth will be tough they will have nothing to lose and Mayo are not always comfortable playing in Mchale Park, and then Cork in a neutral venue, probably Limerick again, will always be a tough game.

What was good on Saturday, forward play and got alot of scores, between the movement inside and the quality of kick passing in, it was great to watch. The defence played well, the new lads are still holding there own, McBrien is a very good full back just need to keep him fit. Callinan is taking to senior inter county very well.
Again the forward play was very good, but the best thing for me was seeing the quality of subs that came on, Mayo were dominant in the game and then to see Durcan, Hession, Conroy come on is a great sign of the squad Mayo are building. Good to see Eoghan McLoughlin get a goal and boost his confidence, he had not be going well in previous 2 games, but you wouldn't like to see him coming on for last 15/20 mins if you were opposition with the pace he has.
Ruane looked in great shape the last day, showed great pace numerous times, and Doherty looked to be in best shape we have seen him in years.

Good win but nobody getting carried away. It this win was 10-15 years ago the hype machine would be in fully swing but those days are long gone. As McStay said it's two points and we move onto the next game.

The team, most notably Matty Ruane and Jordan Flynn looked flat towards the end of the league and seem to be refreshed so the so the six week break on current evidence looks to have done our lads the world of good.

No complacency now, Louth at home and Cork in Limerick must be treated with respect. We must now aim to top the group and straight into a quarter final.

Brilliant result for Mayo at the weekend and played some lovely football.

Your only concern would be - is it shadowing over the fact that Mayo are brilliant when the game is open and they can run the ball but when teams drop back and slow them down they really seem to struggle and we havent seen them control a game in this scenario yet?

I would agree. Mayo could do with a cagey game against a well organised defence, maybe Louth can give them that.

Good win but it doesn't change much. All you have succeeded in doing is poking the bear. The new system really means nothing because Kerry will still qualify and you could meet them again in a few weeks. Not your fault

Fair point. Man to man open football and Mayo can match the very best and win most games against the others. I think that's the reason those Mayo v Dublin and Kerry games were so epic down the years. Mayo always struggled against defensive setups and that's on a slight on teams that setup that way. It's up to McStay and Co to plan and counter act this when it happens later in the year.

Well done to Mayo. A great win and looked really good. Hats off to McStay for his input. Very few teams now play with two inside forwards which gives the sweeper a good start in front of full back line. I d say Kerry were expecting Ó Shea to roam but played inside most of the game meaning the Jerry fb line were man to man all the time and Morley our sweeper trying to block runs through. Mayo very sharp and we'll deserved win.

Funny enough the only people I know who believe and harp on about the curse are not from Mayo at all. It's a good story though.
