Think that we've all been here before and know not to take anything with Monaghan as a given. Sunday will be as tough as any other game and could very easily turn very wrong for Monaghan. One game at a time, We have the talent to win it but it's the focus I'd be more concerned about.

We have been here before over the years Longford 2016 Down 2017 Fermanagh 2018 Cavan 2020. Westmeath are Leinster champions and anyone who watched their display in that leinster final would be a complete idiot to take them lightly. Actually dont think we will as that monaghan side of mid 2010s was probably one of our best ever teams but suffered from complacency when favourites got away with some bad displays Carlow 2017 springs to mind. This team is not as good as that side players wise and they'll know they cant afford to slacken off or will be punished. Its a good chance for both teams to get to a quarter final and am hoping clones factor swings it our way nothing more. Be nothing in it either way and westmeath unlike roscommon will travel well am sure of that. After Armagh were beaten last sunday westmeath for a couple of hours were the only unbeaten side left in the country and you gotta respect that. They knocked the favourites for leinster meath out and put dublin to the sword in emphatic fashion in extra time in leinster final even after looking like they'd blown it in normal time. McHugh is a former disciple of Jimmy's and his old man who knows football inside out.

True there, make no doubt about there will be a game in westmeath. Like your previous post, they play off the cuff and throw caution to the wind. They have alot of pace and a decent middle third. I actually thought we played very well against roscommon. We set the tone early and took the sting out of the game, tagging numerous scores. We didn't allow roscommon any momentum. I'd be happy enough with that approach Sunday. Mc Cartan needs to be marked tightly as does Heslin. If connelan starts, it will give them a push at midfield. Galway did cut through them at ease, we can do likewise but must get on top early. I think this game will be very close, we tend to struggle as favourites, just take a look at our record in the past 15 years. Longford, offaly, laois, down, cavan, fermanagh have caught us. But I do feel we are getting momentum at the right time and can beat westmeath.

Make no mistake about it wmeath are well primed to beat monaghan some great footballers Wallace mccartan and a forward line that's hard to watch and they will go to the end like ourselves add in the fact that mark mchugh knows monaghan players strengths and weakness from his time with corduff plus they will bring massive support westmeath feed off momentum within a match and its up to monaghan to break that momentum but all in all monaghan will have to perform better that last 3 or 4 matches to achieve 1/4 spot ,doable but this westmeath team are flying high but I do see last Sundays match stretching them.as it was warm and sweaty in Galway Farneyblueandwhite (Monaghan) - Posts: 162 - 18/06/2026 13:59:10 2680447 Link 0 |
