Any truth to the rumor that McDonnell has walked away from the panel? Heard this morning. BFox1986 (Monaghan) - Posts: 2 - 10/04/2024 14:49:37 2537155 Link 0 |
Bannigan had the ball in his right arm, Cavan player came in from the left, he was never going to win it legally, he put the arm into the stomach, he never went for the ball because he knew he had no chance of winning it.. It was foul play.. at the ground I said it before the ref blew the whistle. it was a foul on Bannigan. No matter, Cavan were going to win the game, this had no bearing.. but if you want to go back and forth, keep on doing it.. it will keep you on the Monaghan thread for another while..

Oh dear. I'm not going to embarrass the lad on here talking about him but he had understandable reasons for opting out of playing county football this year. No would be amazed if Boyle (Truagh) isn't playing county football next year. Also yes, for midfield I would rather have McCarville than Duffy. As for the 6 lads that you said aren't good enough to be playing county football that started for us.. what does that say about the lads that can't get a game ahead of them? People need to readjust their expectations for Monaghan. Being realistic, our form and the quality of players within the county all point to the fact that we are now a mid-table Division 2 side. Agree the ref gave Cavan some handy enough frees that we dont normally get we are normally at the wrong end of these decisions like in the 2020 ulster final where 7 major calls including 2 incorrect black cards went against us this is one of the few cavan matches that i have been at in my lifetime that the ref favoured us. breffnibluewhite (Cavan) - Posts: 484 - 10/04/2024 21:39:53 2537240 Link 1 |
Not a good week for Monaghan football with the beating the U20s took tonight. PolicemanFox (Monaghan) - Posts: 191 - 10/04/2024 21:56:58 2537244 Link 0 |
We're you at the U.20 game? If you were, you would have it figured out by now. Monaghan football is in a good place. Onwards and Upwards.

Is there any truth to this? Vinny is one phone call away from an NFL team from an absolute nightmare. If so he would need to be knocking on Scotstown Fordes door or be on the phone to Kirk from Magheracloone in Oz (although I think he impressed recently at AFL trials in Adelaide by all accounts) Limited options otherwise unless he goes for an outfielder Jimsam12 (Donegal) - Posts: 20 - 11/04/2024 07:59:05 2537276 Link 0 |
I fear mid-table division 2 may be the best possible outcome next spring. Division 2 next year is filled with local derbies and a potential away / tough games to Cork and Roscommon. Division 2 teams: Monaghan, Cavan, Down, Louth, Meath, Cork, Roscommon and Westmeath. Very few of those are gimmie's... Promotion is not guaranteed and relegation is far from uncertain. Monaghan U20 were already qualified for the knockout round and as a result rested nearly all the regular starters (I think only 3 or possibly 4 first choice players started) against Tyrone so I wouldn't pay any heed to the U20 result from last night. Tyrone were at full strength. McElholm from Tyrone looks like a serious talent, with scorching pace. Very few of the Monaghan lads stood up to make sure they could get starting spots in the next game. Kian Duffy might be the only one who emerged with any credit from last night game. Monaghan U20's will play the loser of Donegal and Armagh which was postponed last night. sleater (Monaghan) - Posts: 178 - 11/04/2024 08:26:02 2537279 Link 0 |
Why would we apologise?

Exactly... all the fringe players were playing. A date with losers of Armagh Donegal await next Wednesday. They play this Saturday.

The stats graphic put out by Ulster GAA for the Monaghan Cavan game is interesting and only backed up what people have said here: sleater (Monaghan) - Posts: 178 - 11/04/2024 09:54:01 2537288 Link 0 |
With the 6 week break, the likelihood is that the u20's will be wrapped up. Some of them might add something to the senior panel. Other counties have not hesitated to bring younger lads in and you could argue our over-reliance on our older players is starting to cost us.

Sat beside a reasonable cavan supporter in clones who told me monaghan were a good side but played far too cautious over the years allowing teams to stay in games. First half on Sunday perfect example. He also said if three of your best players which they are were two 36 year old and a 37 year old you are going nowhere. Hard to argue with that . Hughes was Monaghans best player on Sunday until he went off injured. O Connell and McManus still best options in their positions but Monaghan have no choice now but to play the younger lads. If they dont relegation to div 3 is on cards next year. Have been v unlucky with injuries through notably mcenespie Ward and o hanlon .

If we have O'Hanlon and Bannigan starting we are a match for anyone . We can miss others & not such a big loss (with exception of Beggan). We know from the 2 Derry games last year that we can't have McManus and Jack starting together. A year on, this even more apparent. High energy is a must in today's game !

Regardless a 27pt defeat is a shocker. Won't do any of the players any favours.

I don't think he favoured us tho. He was giving soft frees both ways. Cavan just drew more of them with our direct running. 2 shocking calls went Monaghan's way - the Darren Hughes push and the Cian Reilly one where he slapped the ball cleanly but got penalised. I think he was 100% fair, 50/50. . And I would agree, we don't tend to get that for whatever reason. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5244 - 11/04/2024 23:02:55 2537438 Link 1 |
An entire 2nd strong team played .. great way to see who was up for it! No point playing full team when you are already guaranteed a spot in the quarters! At least all lads got championship time .. you have to remember it's about preparing for senior .. no one remembers who wins u20 titles!
veterngaa (Monaghan) - Posts: 748 - 12/04/2024 09:12:20 2537456 Link 0 |
Agree on both of those, potentially a 2 point swing there. Anyway we are still owed from Beggan's 13 steps in 2013 when we should have had a 21 yard tap over to draw level in the last minute!
