I'd be in the more hopeful camp for Monaghan to do well this year. After the Derry beating last year they could have folded. Instead they adjusted and were playing at the level needed at the business end of the season where other more fancied teams had fallen by the way side. You have to take advantage of the opportunities as they present themselves. PolicemanFox (Monaghan) - Posts: 191 - 26/03/2024 16:04:30 2533923 Link 0 |
At no point did I blame the Keeper alone for every goal conceded or as the sole reason for our overall difficulty in Division 1, your seeing things that aren't there. By the way I didn't start the conversation about outfield players going in goal, I added my opinion as to who on the panel I think would be best suited to it, which unless I missed something is the whole point of a message board. Why don't you have a go at the posters who opened the topic if you find it so offensive? I will leave you at it lad, rather than argue any more with you. I have no clue who you are or what you know about football, the same way you don't have a clue who I am or what/who I know. The one thing I do know is I have been a "sunshine" supporter of the Monaghan football team for as far back as I can remember, through a lot more thin than thick and if things go thin again I will turn up and support them as often as l can, that's good enough for me, I won't worry about anyone else. Not sure about league, but Mark Keogh would have been the keeper during the Eamon McEnaney era 2011/2012 so I reckon he would have been the last man to play a championship game before Beggan

Anyone venture a starting 15 for the Cavan game at this point? Assuming everyone available, and alternately if O'Hanlon Ward Leonard and McAnespie are missing Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1188 - 26/03/2024 18:51:30 2533967 Link 0 |
Keogh and Beggan rotated the Jersey in the 2013 league. With Keogh's last appearance being against Wicklow in round 5 of the league that year.

David Kirk in 2020 came on for Beggan after a black card in the league. Cian Mohan played McKenna cup too in 2016 There's a quiz question and answer! veterngaa (Monaghan) - Posts: 747 - 26/03/2024 19:32:13 2533977 Link 0 |
Are these two still around the panel or even worth a shot?

David Kirk is correct. I remember this article from that time: https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-30987268.html Its interesting for these lines: 'When David Kirk came on for Monaghan against Donegal in Round 5 of the Allianz League, he became just the 23rd player to feature for the Farney in the campaign. Andrew Woods and Colin Walshe have only three substitute appearances between them also, meaning boss 'Banty' McEnaney has effectively worked off an ultra-slim core of just 20 players so far. It's the same story year in, year out with Monaghan, a small county of around 60,000, who similarly used the least number of players in the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Division 1 campaigns.' As it stands i believe Mc anespie, Ward, Leonard will be out. Also if O Hanlon isn't fully fit, he might not start with an eye o the bigger picture. Also its a big call to start Hamill too if he is coming back from injury, all depends how he is going in training etc. There is one spot on the half forward line everyone is fighting for, whoever is fittest will get it. The team I think Vinny will go with is Mc Donnell Wylie Lavelle O toole Karl Duffy Mc Carthy Mohan Darren Mc Nulty Bannigan O Hanlon/Hamill/Ward/Woods/Mc anespie Mc Manus/Jones Jack Irwin monaghanmad (Monaghan) - Posts: 409 - 27/03/2024 09:11:14 2534048 Link 0 |
In fairness Banty used a lot of new players .. kirk, woods, philly donellly, pauric Keenan, Keith mceneaney, Shane woods, mcbennett, o toole, mulligan , Fergal Hanratty , Shane hanratty, Irwin , Gallagher … Pretty sure all them came into the team in banty time veterngaa (Monaghan) - Posts: 747 - 27/03/2024 09:41:09 2534055 Link 0 |
I thank the lord every day that Hoganstand users do not manage our county senior team. A 'ready made keeper' gave me a good chuckle. Darren Hughes played as a keeper when all he had to do for his kickouts was to boot the ball out as far as possible. Can you imagine the scenes if Darren Hughes was being asked to pick out men in tight spaces against a press? This is no slight on the man, because how on earth could he be expected to fulfill such a role. If we had him in goal, the only option would be to boot it out the middle… whilst we might genuinely have the weakest midfield options in Ulster, so I can't imagine that working too well. Hell of a plan. HB245 (Monaghan) - Posts: 251 - 27/03/2024 14:19:12 2534094 Link 1 |
Ha ha, that's fair enough assessment. As ideas go it doesn't really stand up to much scrutiny so it's probably best filed under Monday morning BS talk. You see it is possible to take down an idea without getting personal or aggressive in tone with other posters no matter how cracked the idea. I generally keep my mouth shut on tactics n formations in the modern game as its practically a different sport to the one I played, way back when, which is probably the wisest course of action. That's why I like popping on here and chatting to lads who are playing the game now as it opens the eyes as to how much its changed.

I think the men suggesting he do goal would be men who don't believe in this short kick out stufff .. they come form an era where ball was booted out long and far and they thought it was great football

A big win for the U20s against a Down side heavily backed by the bookies after a draw vs Tyrone!
