Another impressive win for Colaiste Mhuire in the Leinster Junior championship, beat Marist 3-9 to 1-6, talented squad of players, possibly stronger than last year's which won Leinster as key players like Connaire, Scahill, Monaghan are fully up to the age, good subs too, young lad came on as sub at half time and scored 3 points. Watching the club football today and having seen a few sigerson and schools games lately, was the need for major rule changes really required. Those three competitions were brilliant. The speed and standard are brilliant to watch. Seems we are changing alot of rules just for the intercounty game. northern football managers have alot to answer for. What ya think Upforthegame23 (Westmeath) - Posts: 121 - 19/01/2025 21:17:42 2586443 Link 0 |
I believe the new rules and scoring system will give teams a better chance at making a comeback. In the modern game, falling 5 or 6 points behind creates a significant challenge, making it incredibly difficult to claw your way back. However, with the introduction of the two-point arc system, just two successful scores can bring a team right back into contention. While some may argue against this perspective-for example, as seen yesterday when Errigal Ciaran almost staged one of the greatest comebacks in club history-the reality is that if a team goes 5 or 6 points ahead under the current system, the opposition can often "park the bus," maintain possession, and grind out the result. This approach as we all know can make the game overly defensive, dull, and frustrating for spectators. The new rules could add excitement and prevent teams from resorting to overly defensive tactics. It's a good question but it's surely significant that the more teams train then the more negative they play. Schools, Colleges and clubs train quite often but not to the crazy extent of inter county set ups. All these hangers on at inter county level need to justify their "expenses." A recent inter county challenge match was held where the players had breakfast at the pitch at 10.15, they then had various meetings and trained at 12.00, played the match at 1.00, fed afterwards at 3 and left grounds at 3.30. Over five hours apart from travelling, huge unnecessary costs.

Any word on how Westmeath got on against Mayo over the weekend? Fighting-Cocks69 (Westmeath) - Posts: 34 - 20/01/2025 14:37:47 2586599 Link 0 |
U20 footballers played cavan in challenge match yesterday. Not sure of the result but it's early doors. I believe they have a strong team this year with Keane, Baker, Ormsby, Duncan and Murray all still underage. Would be hopeful that this team can go further than last years did. Northern Managers??? So other 3 provinces immune to tactics and blanket defences. Totally agree so many rule changes were not needed, the 3 up would have been sufficient to make the game better without 2 pointers etc and maybe keeper stays in his area, that would have made GAA better spectacle without so much more on officials Club football has been excellent lately, plus sigerson but remember those games between evenly matched teams who then more likely to play open toe to toe football, the more cynical tactics come in when gaps between teams and try win arm wrestle type games macca999 (Fermanagh) - Posts: 1147 - 20/01/2025 14:51:15 2586603 Link 0 |
Can go further and win the All Ireland B, perhaps. From what I have seen of them in a recent Challenge Match, we won't be getting out of the group with Dublin and Meath in it again. We were like Tots running around against Dublin and Meath last year until we found our level against teams like Carlow and Longford.

As the year progresses, many comments will be made here on Westmeath County football. Before the League starts on Sunday, what do contributors think should be the Priorities and strategies of the new management for Westmeath Football for 2025 and in what order of ranking, BarrRst (Westmeath) - Posts: 31 - 21/01/2025 11:44:50 2586763 Link 0 |
Our biggest hurdle will be to stay in Div.2.We have 4 home games so to win at least 3 has to be the target. We need young up and coming players to be involved and introduced into getting game time. This will be hard on them as inter county Div.2 level is tough but it needs to be done. Our last management set up failed to blood young players which was their choice but now with at least 8 definate starters gone in one go it leaves a massive void but I would have every confidence in these young players and the new management team/squad.

Staying in div 2 is probably the best we can hope for, it's a real uphill battle but we'll see. Is there any word on who will captain the team this year? Should be Ray Connellan in my opinion

Agree Ray Connellan or Sam McCartan would be ideal captains.

Not doubting Ray Connellans quality, however I believe the captain needs to be the one to stand up when we need leaders most, down through the years he has tended to go hiding when the going got tough, Louth 2 years ago in Navan springs to mind immediately. I feel Sam mc or Ronan Wallace are the men to lead this team going forward

It's a pivotal season for Westmeath Football. Avoiding relegation from Division 2 should be the main priority, that would be a stunning achievement as the team is the worst we have had in years. There's no question that retirements etc have left us with a squad bereft of experience, few teams in the country wouldn't be affected by losing 6 or 7 starters, especially influential players. You know the situation is bad when you're picking players who haven't played club football in 3 years. It's very difficult to replace those players who have gone but the reality is our strength in depth is poor because of no massive follow through and a case of blind loyalty that had existed for years. Relegation wouldn't be a bad thing, Division 3 would be a better environment to rebuild.

At the Leinster semi final in Kinnegad today , hard luck to Moate. Well beaten by Athy 0-12 to 0-4. Massive opportunity for Colaiste Mhuire to win it as I dont think Athy can match them A_Chairde (Westmeath) - Posts: 262 - 21/01/2025 17:51:28 2586842 Link 0 |
A ridiculous statement that this is worst team in years. Some supporter. I remember when alot of the players you named started in div 2 previously. Thank god social media wasn't as big back then. Those players were relegated a number of times but stuck with it and eventually got westmeath back to div 2 with some brilliant days in maroon. Please give the new batch the same time as I believe they to will become our future stars

Was watching game aswell today, Athy are a big strong physical team. Alot bigger than cbs mullingar. I have said it for awhile that I thought Athy were favourites for bosco cup this year. Cbs will need alot to go very right for them on the day and athy to have a bad day. Whitney from moate was very good for moate today but moate could not penatrate athy, shot selection was very poor, had enough chances to win but didn't take any of them. Athy dominated game and never really looked under pressure
