Kinnegad topped group A and but for a quirk of the draw, should have been in the final. The 10 point loss in the semi final was misleading as there was 3 points in it with minutes to go and Kinnegad spurned a goal chance to level it. They are unquestionably at least third best and but for a host of different reasons should be second. I probably ranked Shamrocks more on potential than performance.both they and Garrycastle were v average this year. Iarmhisamhi (Westmeath) - Posts: 85 - 13/10/2026 21:36:26 2697229 Link 1 |

Exactly my point. You can't rank teams purely on head to head results without considering the context. In the context of the Athlone v Tubberclair game, Tubberclair were already through and therefore made changes. There's certainly an argument for ranking Tubberclair highly, but putting them 3rd purely because they topped Section B and brought St Loman's to extra time in a quarter final is a bit of a leap. Running the beaten finalists close is a creditable performance but are you placing a lot of weight on one performance? In my opinion, rankings should reflect consistency, and performances over time, not simply how close you came to beating a particular team on one occasion. The Downs, St Loman's and Kinnegad, in that order, have consistently been the 3 best teams over the last 5 years.

I'm not always right, but I can understand why you'd think that, Mike.

Your last sentence is spot on , and is an absolute killer for Kinnegad, If they don't win it very soon, I would say either 2027 or 2028, then they'll probably miss the boat. It's rare to see a team that close for an extended time and not win one. Tyrrellspass group that lost a few finals to Lomans the only other recent example I can think of.

Going into Mullingar from Dublin side it certainly seems that they are! I think the relocation of Curraghmore primary School to the Mullingar suburbs has had something to do with it. It is now a large town school that is oversubscribed for applications to attend. This relocation has certainly increased their catchment area and their grounds are easy to get to for parents. So yes, The Downs now have the best of both worlds with a substantial rural catchment as far as Coralstown, right into large estates in Mullingar.
