Replying To Claretandblue:  "Kildare beat Meath in same group tonight so they're definitely through but a defeat in Newbridge next week and a win for Longford vs Meath would see Westmeath eliminated on head to head with Meath. Minor results can be unpredictable as tonight's results showed. Offaly had a very fancied minor team but well beaten tonight by Louth and on verge of elimination"
Thanks. I had thought Kildare beat Longford but just checked again and Longford came back to draw with them.

Thoughts? Strongest half back line we could have, I think there migbt be a late change in the full back line though, possibly Sam Smith?? First involvement for him this year? Also would Lynam be fit enough to start in midfield. Unusual to have no proper shot stoppers in a 26.

I'm a clown, twas the GAA+ lineup, thanks for clarifying. Catching up on WH news at 5am has its pitfalls!

Best of luck on Saturday evening.
While recent results haven't quite reflected the efforts on the pitch, the signs are clear - our style of play is evolving, and our fitness is right up there with the best. The draw last time out showed grit, growth, and a glimpse of what's coming.
This team has all the foundation for a breakthrough.
With the upcoming competition around the corner, I have a strong sense that everything is about to click, A strong
positive support from forums etc such as this and from the sideline would help the "click" happen

Smyth is a fantastic footballer, have seen him mark heslin and luke in club championship and do very well, match fitness will be his issue and making his snr debue with westmeath, same with harte match fitness. But I am optimistic for tonight. Think we are good enough. Get another good performance and get the win.

Definitely up to this level but big step up having not played a minute of the league. Have a great feeling about today, meeting a few of the players during the week the vibes are good. Best of luck to the players and manegement. Iarmhi Abu

What is the rule on square balls now?

My understanding is once the ball is kicked you can go into the square, open to correction.

You can enter once the ball has been played.
Hard luck lads.

Could go into a detailed summary of why we lost but conellans injury is primary reason long story short.

Goalkeeper has to be stronger should have saved both goals tonight

Whatever about the second goal-he had no chance with the first. To be fair his kick outs and distribution was excellant and losing Connellan was the big factor in Westmeaths loss tonight-hr totally controlled the middle of the park and Feilly only came into the game once Ray went off

Best of luck to Kildare. Took their chances. Great to play a championship match to a packed crowd. A nice tidy ground.

We never clicked on our 2 points tonight as we did in the league.

Tough defeat to take, black card seemed harsh and was crucial, thought two goals were preventable, obviously Connellan a huge loss as he was dominating, Luke needed more support, he was outstanding, Kildare's strength in depth important

What are you on about it was right at him? Struck well but he got two big hands on it and went through him. A proper goalie saves it. Actually thought his kick outs improved though apart from that one to Kirwan. However I feel sorry for him he's just not a goalkeeper whatever way you look at it

The shot for the first goal was practically straight at him, perfect height for any goalkeeper. McCormack's kickouts in general were excellent to be fair to him. Ray's injury changed the course of the game, we were the better team up to this point. Luke was the best player on the pitch. Tailteann Cup is a good building block for this team.

Very unlucky tonight in Newbridge. Cracking game though and wish Kildare well in next round but once Westmeath lost Ray Connellan, the game turned with Feely and Bolton getting on top from there on. No luck whatsoever this year. Tailtean Cup now. I hope Westmeath make an effort for it. They just need a win or two to help develop the team.

Unfortunately Connellans injury was the difference , he was man of the match before going off,, Kildare are a poor team , they kicked a lot of bad wides. We are probably a bit unlucky that Lynam is only back and Guerin etc have no natch fitness . It looked like Conor Dillon got a bad injury just as the whistle blew
