The players put in a huge shift on a very warm day. Fully deserved the win. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2605 - 25/04/2026 14:47:29 2668535 Link 0 |

Unfortunately I dunno is it enough to get through Wexford hammered Laois, Wexford and galway in same group as westmeath and two wins, westmeath will have to put up a cricket score against Laois and hope Wexford lose, correct me if I'm wrong, well done today though

Wexford lost to Dublin in round 1 so Westmeath will go through if we beat Laois and Kilkenny beat Wexford. But what a ridiculous Mickey Mouse system Leinster have created. We could be knocked out with 2 wins out of 3, with Dublin and Kilkenny going through with 1 win out of 3. Who comes up with these formats? As people have said here already, why change from a really good tiered format that worked? Same with u20 format. An absolute shambles. Wexford lost to Dublin, some on the Wexford forum seem to be concerned they might not qualify. I'm not quiet sure. Our lads just need to focus on getting a result against Laois next

Wexford and Westmeath both have two points, Wexford have a better score difference by 34 points If Westmeath against Laois better Wexford's result against Kilkenny, Westmeath are through If Wexford better Westmeath's result, Wexford are through If Wexford and Westmeath get the same result, Wexford would be through barring a 34 point swing in score difference Of course, Wexford and Westmeath could both go through but that would involve the two of them winning, Galway losing to Dublin, and then Wexford and Westmeath both having better score difference than Galway But I do agree that it's a stupid format, two groups of four where you play the teams in your actual group would be a much better format ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 1093 - 25/04/2026 17:21:24 2668567 Link 1 |

They use this kind of round robin crossover system in basketball competitions. The idea being you're supposedly seeding teams to give them 1 hard game, 1 middling hard game and 1 relatively level game. I don't know why they changed it to this system but I assume how the Leinster council worked it, is Kilkenny and Galway, last year's Leinster minor winner and finalist are top seeds, Dublin and Wexford are second seeds as last year's beaten semi-finalists and then Laois and Westmeath are third seeds as qualifiers from the first phase. The idea works grand when teams are playing each other all the time and you can gauge their level or seeding a lot better. In basketball, teams might play each other 2, or even 4,times in a season, so on average the better team comes through. These minor hurling teams only play once so the purpose of using the system is completely skewed from the start. The reason why it's completely brainless in this scenario though is none of the teams participating are exactly the same team from last year as teams lose and gain new players each year. Seeding them based on last year's results is pointless for this system with the turnover of players. Westmeath were well bet last year by Dublin minors, by 5 or 6 goals. This year Westmeath are a good bit stronger at this grade and turned over Dublin. It would be very strange now if Westmeath and Wexford both win, and one of them is out after winning 2 matches, while on the other side Dublin and Kilkenny might only win 1 match and end up in a semi final. Agreed. I wouldn't say Westmeath are guaranteed to beat Laois. Minor hurling can be funny like that. Laois ran Galway pretty close in their first game. Apparently, Wexford took full advantage of a huge breeze in the first half to rack up a cricket score against Laois in their second match today. Galway then bet Kilkenny today after we lost by 15 or 16 to Kilkenny so hard to gauge where Laois are at compared to us. I wouldn't underestimate them anyway. It's rare enough Westmeath beat Laois in Portlaoise. The main thing anyway is we go out and try and win our last game first. Worry about score difference later. Wexford have to go out and beat Kilkenny too which as we already found out is no easy feat either. RadioactiveTan (UK) - Posts: 43 - 25/04/2026 17:43:46 2668572 Link 0 |

Our minor hurlers achieve their biggest win in many years, deservedly beating Dublin by seven points with a performance full of energy, determination and lots of good hurling but virtually every poster since focuses on the system in Tier 1 and nothing about the players or management and their achievement. Conor Raleigh was outstanding, 10 points were 6 of those coming from play. The whole team played great stuff. Dheen (Westmeath) - Posts: 1117 - 25/04/2026 19:23:12 2668596 Link 0 |

A superb performance and well done to all concerned. Now its simple go to Portlaoise and win never ever easy. We will need the same energy and determination next week. Nevertheless we cannot get away from the sheer stupidity of the organisers of this competition who made us play two knock out games to get to this group and now we could end up on four poits and eliminated. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1928 - 25/04/2026 20:21:17 2668619 Link 1 |

You have to realize these competitions are run to ensure the stronger hurling counties emerge as winners valley84 (Westmeath) - Posts: 1931 - 25/04/2026 21:06:19 2668634 Link 0 |

Hear, hear. Mighty performance from a great group of well managed players. Let's hope they kick on and get into the semi final that they would deserve. Maroooned (Westmeath) - Posts: 12 - 25/04/2026 21:25:00 2668646 Link 0 |
