I agree with this point about Tommy Doyle. Made this point before the final. However the Gaels also have a high fielder in Eoin Daly so that is a challenge for CTG. Doyle drew a lot of frees yesterday. Might have had 1 more at least but you couldn't fault the ref. LLG had a good spread of scorers. CTG struggled there. I don't buy the argument about rustiness. In fairness CTG had chances. They missed scorable frees and opportunities from play. Reilly had a great first half but seemed out of sorts in the second and missed 2 you would expect him to nail. Looked like striking fluidity was not there in the second. Did he get injured? Williams was outstanding. He was head and shoulders the best yesterday. Great talent and contribution from play in build up etc was as valuable as dead ball and scoring. Someone mentioned silly LLG frees. In my opinion and I mentioned before that this can be part of an effective plan to keep a team outside the arc and 21 where they present a higher goal threat. CTG like LLG will only get so many chances and a certain number may be goal chances. If you make a team take scores from frees out at the 35 -45 m zone then they reduce their goal chances. It's a simple effective defence tool. Look at the scoring stats from frees and play for both sides. Iveagh (Westmeath) - Posts: 15 - 20/10/2025 19:20:38 2640871 Link 0 |
Castletown had few goal chances first half alright but not many wasted obrien one free none after that so disagree with that statement missing simple free missed first free got all after that. Replay different day different ctg could have lot contribution uo front half forward line was marked out put but also when got ball unusually sloppy but credit gaels for huge work done done. Dor all contribution gaels had up front and I agree ctg still got a draw. I get all your points though but not about missed shooting was fairly accurate and williams didn't missed much but obrien didn't miss many or any easy free Gaaforlife2023 (Longford) - Posts: 1043 - 20/10/2025 22:00:02 2640887 Link 0 |
Very good point, for quite a few of those obvious fouls for frees there seemed little or no reaction from the Gaels manager. Normally a manager is going crazy with his players for conceding frees to a side with a reliable free taker but Castletown only got one soft goal from a defensive error and a couple of half chances, conceding a free when a goal chance is possibly on is always smart or cynical, the Gaels will reckon on outgoaling Castletown in the replay as they've done it twice already in championship. Jogger and the Kennedys are good at netting goals, if they get 2-3 in replay it should be enough

I thought Castletown could have had 3/4 goals, O'Reilly blazed over from close range, Jack Gallagher struck a shot but directly at Conaty in the goals, Peter Clarke's direct run through the heart of the Gaels defence led to a goal chance as well.

Gallagher and Clarke's shots were 20 yards out, barely half chances I'd say, taking the point on each occasion far better option, Castletown seemed keen to go for goals thinking it would finish the Gaels quickly. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2414 - 21/10/2025 11:40:55 2640931 Link 0 |
Writing off ctg or implying to if and buts still garls drew didn't win ctg can improve.

Castletown can play through the channels with some very good stick players particularly Aonghus and Peter Clarke, along with Jack Murphy. Persisted to whip balls in on O Reilly when it wasn't working in second half. Blackjack (Westmeath) - Posts: 45 - 21/10/2025 14:12:18 2640965 Link 0 |
They might have had more, and so should LLG who could easily have scored two more in the first half. Kennedy had one over the bar when the goal looked easier, and he reacted quickly to another great save from Tommy Doyle's shot, but the ball seemed to get stuck in the goalmouth, which looked a bit tacky and maybe ground caused the same problem for Conaty when he seemed to lose it trying to pick it or scoop it out and ended up own goaling. So, for sure, both sides could have had more goals. In a straight shootout for points, CGT will win this. LLG will need goals to take it, as they're likely to concede frees. That level of physical intensity they use when holding up the player might be acceptable to some referees, but in Westmeath it tends to get pulled up, so they'll get caught for it. If LLG are to win, they'll probably need two or three goals while keeping CTG from scoring any. If CTG get 2 early goals and stick to their system of playing ball, they can win it. That said, having seen a fair few of the round-robin games, LLG seem to adapt their game plan from match to match. They may bring a new tactic. However, beyond their main 15-17 players, they might lack depth in the panel to deliver that. A lot will also depend on how intense this next game is by whom, and how it's refereed. Fair enough, I'll accept your point of view about Niall O Brien, I haven't looked a this on TV so it seemed to me watching on the day he missed more chances. I wasn't trying to dis him but just to say he might have scope to swing it with less misses the next day on fine margins. In the HB/HF area LLG just seemed to outmuscle and pressurise CTG a lot, they usually get more time and space and every second to steady or look up for an option disappears in these situations.

No one is writing off CTG, it's still very much CTGs to lose. Any team who can do what they did in Leinster last year have a reserve to draw on. They know how to get over the line from last year. LLG have to get the monkey off the back and they may be fighting that as much as CTG.

Better team won. Delvin fully deserved it. Plunketts have serious underage talent and could give Leinster Intermediate a real rattle next year. Blackjack (Westmeath) - Posts: 45 - 21/10/2025 22:10:18 2641021 Link 0 |
A fantastic crowd in Loman's tonight and a wonderful victory for Delvin, thoroughly deserved overall but especially in extra time. Had better players all over the field and their defence kept a tight rein on the plunketts attack. Adam Ennis, Alan Cox, Josh Coll, Dean Ennis, Pat Clune, Gaffney at wing back, Darragh Clinton all had big games, Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2414 - 21/10/2025 23:09:54 2641030 Link 0 |
Great win for Delvin excellent game of hurling Dean Ennis outstanding there will be brighter days ahead for plunketts with the underage talent coming through. Very tough ask however for delvin to try now turn around to go again in leinster at the weekend. Dazzler30 (Westmeath) - Posts: 68 - 22/10/2025 08:31:17 2641038 Link 0 |
Fair play to Delvin and Plunketts seemingly another excellent game last night. It's a long way away but Senior B looks very very tight again next year. Pollard will be hoping to bounce straight back up, Plunketts will feel it has to be their year after getting so close this year, Wood, Ringtown and Brownstown will ignore all of the above and take a few scalps . Brigits might struggle a bit moving up a tier. Bigjoe1 (Westmeath) - Posts: 77 - 22/10/2025 09:39:40 2641044 Link 0 |
Delvin a good example in persistence and reliance considering they've lost so many finals and went on to win one after 140 minutes plus of hurling in 3 days. Blackjack (Westmeath) - Posts: 45 - 22/10/2025 10:24:38 2641051 Link 0 |
Castlepollard,Ringtown,Brownstown,Crookedwood and Brigids will all have something to say about that in Westmeath GAA's best competition.Plunketts lost to Delvin and Brownstown this year and we saw nothing to suggest they will be a dominant force in 26

How the hell is that Westmeath GAA's best competition
CleanShoulder (Westmeath) - Posts: 386 - 22/10/2025 15:45:10 2641117 Link 0 |
Because it's the most competitive competition. Each side capable of beating each other or coming very close to. The Wood finished fourth and were beaten by a point in two games by sides that reached final or semi final. In Senior A there's a big gap currently between top three and bottom three.
