Can only take my hat off to clonkill, most of the county including myself wrote them off due to retirements etc, they seem even more balanced than ever now all be it just the first round, some big men retiring but even more physical men replaced them very well put together team, Adam Loughlin a massive boost to them Niall Mitchell like a quarter back and Anthony price and Jordie smith lethal from any angle inside. Castletown a little flat and I would expect a huge back lash against the gaels on Wednesday. Gaels and raharney to win today with Castletown and clonkill to win Wednesday. Clonkill were excellent.Mitchell ran the game,Adam Loughlin was good but Luke Loughlins injury lookled serious.Castletown were poor with strange tactics.Senior B is going to be a dogfight Delvin beating Plunketts by 2 with the Wood and Brownstown drawing.I would expect Daltons to win today with the Gaels to beat Cullion and Raharney to beat Pollard in A.Ringtown look good in Intermediate with Castletown B if they dont start replacing some of their seniors also strong. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1459 - 24/07/2022 11:11:47 2433853 Link

Very exciting championship ahead it seems" Yeah Clonkill seem to have a good balance to their team now, I was impressed with Peadar Scally at centre back and also young Shaw I think it was in midfield. Castletown were very very flat, never got going at all. They look to be trying to draft in a few young lads and haven't got a set team yet. Shane Clavin and Joe Clarke will be a boost to them when they are back. Varley is not long back and is working his way back into it. Peter Clarke impressive off the bench for CTG. Surprised at Castletown's tactics last night. Allowing Niall Mitchell a total free reign for the entire match was crazy. Johnny Bermingham wasted at full back, Clonkill got the best out of their players with the Loughlins, Niall Dowdall, Mitchell's, Peadar Scally and Andrew Shaw particularly good. Easy win for Clonkill last night, whatever was wrong with CTG. A bit of controversy at the end of the Wood/Brownstown game with referee blowing it up when wood forward was about to strike for the winning point. Great result for Cullion but damaging for the Gaels prospects of overall championship success. Raharney very solid last night although Pollard were out of their depth. No David Higgins who would be their key player. Pressure on pollard now to beat Cullion or their staring relegation. Castletown need a performance this week. What a performance from cullion, they really were robbed of the win, played some seriously good hurling, My prediction for the team to beat changes slightly with Raharney the best performing team of the weekend, serious movement and skill shown right through the field, Castletown and raharney to win Wednesday with a few points to spare. Raharney were very impressive but surely opponents need to be taken into account. Raharney easily beat Castlepollard who would be ranked 5th while Clonkill easily beat Castletown, one of the sides fancied to win the championship. They also had a new look side minus Brendan Murtagh, Paddy Dowdall with Andrew Shaw, Josh Murtagh starting. Great to see Cullion step up and close the gap. Hopefully, they can maintain or even up that level of performance. It's been a while since a team came up and was able to hold their own. Early days for the big 3 teams though. Their 1st round teams and performances can often be very different to the business end. Clonkill surprised everyone though, just not as much as Cullion. Very impressed with Cullion, some very talented players. Their county players Kevin Regan, Jack Gillen and Jack Galvin were superb but Conor Regan, Shane Broughan and Conor Shaw could all come to the attention of Joe Fortune by the end of the championship too. You're not being remotely honest Chick, you're saying it's coincidence that Sean Flanagan, Kelvin Reilly, Dan McCartan, Sean Kelly, Jack Geoghegan are not hurling this year? That's the nonsense you referred to. Kevin Regan is an exception as his inter county career would end if he didn't hurl for Cullion and county board likely to get involved. Loman's know that but other lads are club only players and in majority I mentioned their clubs need everyone on board. There's definitely an embargo or pressure on them not to hurl and in all those cases they're far from certain of their club places with Loman's and it wouldn't happen with Paddy Dowdall or an established footballer.
