For the same reason that MLR thrived when three clubs came together. If everyone is playing both codes together, it becomes a totally different beast. As for grounds, keep three and build houses on one of the two in Leighlinbridge.

Build houses ... LOL The superbowl would obviously have to be retained given the prime location but the All Blacks would never give up Paul Monahan Park. Not a chance. It's not a problem that was faced when MLR was founded as Rathanna and Borris had nothing but the use of a farmers field. Ballymurphy not much better at the time but great facility there now. Btw wasn't MLR a merger of four clubs, not three? Weren't Kilcloney part of the merger? Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1715 - 15/12/2025 14:08:27 2648414 Link 0 |

I don't think that gets dealt with at county convention, its a separate matter for the new county board. I understand there's a meeting on Thursday.

Convention deals with chairman etc however meeting held the other night was all about proposals. Back to two weeks on 2 weeks off apparently. Also Eire Og proposed a new format which is going to come in for football too. After that I heard nothing else.

What does the new proposed format consist of? Carlowrising (Carlow) - Posts: 182 - 19/12/2025 09:52:12 2648823 Link 0 |

I understand it's one group of 8 with 5 rounds of group games. Random draw but can't play the same team twice in the group. So essentially you play 5 of the other 7 teams in the competition. Top 2 into semi finals, 3rd to 6th into quarter finals and bottom 2 in relegation. ACarlowGael (Carlow) - Posts: 21 - 19/12/2025 10:51:13 2648829 Link 0 |

Back to a mixed season as per pre COVID and football championships now have 5 group games. Honestly more football is better but how does it change championship structure

Would it be the "swiss format" that they use in the champions league in soccer now?

Great to hear it is going back to football in the summer also, the way it should be. Looks like a champions league style format now, one group but you play 5 games, top 4 making a semi final, be interesting to see how that works out but shoild make for a great championship

One the darkest days in the history of Carlow hurling. It will kill all the progress made at Burren Rangers, Kildavin, Carlow Town and Naomh Brid. And set Ballinkillen back also. Decades of contempt for the ancient game haven't gone away and its seeping out of the usual suspects once again. Once supposes the endeavors of Mount Leinster Rangers this year upset some people. As for the new football format, it's a joke. Robbed from soccer.. The foreign games fans at Teach Asca have been watching too much Shamrock Rovers, or maybe a more appropriate example would be Liverpool. The fools are dancing with their rage, I swerved in naught, something to perfection brought, as a great Sligo man once wrote. Ceatharlach abú, an iománaíocht abú! Great to see the split season finally scrapped, a failed experiment by all accounts. Collio (Carlow) - Posts: 55 - 19/12/2025 18:36:31 2648876 Link 0 |

So failed that we just had our best intermediate hurling championship for 40 years, and we could have had the senior back to six teams. That has to be unlikely now. Or at best will last a season. So failed that a football team narrowly lost a Leinster Final last weekend. This is a terrible decision. It's a death blow to hurling. Devastating to genuine GAA people. I'm with Carps on this one. It will improve football in the county but only relatively marginally. The setback for hurling will not be marginal. It will be much more significant. How will any hurling only or dual club outside of the south keep numbers hurling when we all know the pressure on players to concentrate on football only will be considerable across most of the county. I'll be interested to see what happens in Bagenalstown. Senior hurling semi finalists last year, senior football semi finalists this year. Either one code will be losers or maybe more likely they'll be got between both and will back in both. That can't be good. Bagenalstown was in doldrums in both codes for long enough. As for Naomh Brid it must be very disheartening. Virtually all their players are football no. 1 priority. Likewise CTHC. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1715 - 19/12/2025 23:13:50 2648897 Link 0 |

Very dramatic here isn't it? Both codes were more successful prior to the split. CarlowJuniorB (Clare) - Posts: 61 - 19/12/2025 23:48:29 2648899 Link 0 |
