It got me thinking after replying to a Dublin poster about how often managers win an All-Ireland in their first season. Since the turn of the century you've had Joe Kernan, Mickey Harte, Jack O'Connor (somehow managing it three separate times), Pat O'Shea, Jim Gavin, Dessie Farrell, and Brian Dooher/Fergal Logan all doing it. It's a remarkable statistic. And this year, three of the four All-Ireland semi-finalists are managed by first-year managers. A lot of talk recently about new rules suiting good forwards when they get good ball. Thats true, but one thing that's been overlooked is the fact that the 4 teams in the semis have defenders who have nullidied really good forwards on the opposing teams. Maybe Murphy would be a yes man but I think Karl would definitely challenge Jim more. Maybe that's not what he wants. I hope he just comes out and tells us if he staying or not soon. Nah, Murphy and Lacey would be both want to manage their own way at some point, no doubt Mark McHugh will be a contender in future too. Murphy has a lot on in the coming months in his personal life and a busy high profile job. Karl Lacey is flat out already too, so I can't see them joining Jim, even if he wanted them. Hearing stories that Jim had the players doing heavy running in the week before the Dublin game, sounds unlikely, but chat of that is going around. Bonner was criticised for playing half forwards in defence yet jim played mogan and mc hugh as defenders plus ciaran moore. Not Mcmenamin anyway, hes miles off. One problem i see is we are losing the attacking threat from players like Moore by playing them as defenders.
