Coaching in the clubs is the real problem, at all levels.

I must say I agree with everything you write, and it is refreshing to read your posts! You have a great understanding of the commitment Players & Managers dedicate to an amateur sport in a small county. Thank you!

Just wondering how you would improve coaching in the club, bearing in mind right the way up from under age all these coaches are amateur giving up their time to help out at their local clubs, and also on the end of continuous criticism from people who know nothing about the game and who never give any time to any community activity! Not as easy as you would imagine! I was involved in coaching under age in Kildare some years ago the club had 50 players available to play under 10 and right up to minor the numbers were the same! In Leitrim most clubs struggle to get a team together, so most of the issues in Leitrim are down to numbers and not the coaches, well that is just my opinion of course! Exactly, with the ready made excuses. Population is the go to excuse. I don't buy that. The reality is it is coaching. You can see what proper coaching can achieve last weekend!! We need coaches that know what they are doing. Some of the top club teams in Ireland are better coached than our county team, so let's not use population as an excuse. Poacher made a good comment he said he wants young players to become a "wee bit obsessive about their football" he is coming from a province where that culture is in place. We don't have that here, and won't when we have ready made excuses for failure. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 379 - 11/03/2025 08:29:09 2595890 Link 1 |
County board should look into what Manorhamilton have done in recent years. Then try to replicate it in every other club in the county.

Great point. The examples are out there, at club and county level. It's not rocket science but it does require organisation and some joint up thinking.

And the reality that the future will involve less clubs in the county with those clubs combining their resources and facilities for the betterment of all. The 'poor auld Leitrim' mentality will have to go because quite frankly it's used an excuse for a lot of things.

As great as what Manorhamilton are doing i wouldn't agree that copying them is the solution either. It's shouldn't be a one size fits all approach. At club level things go in cycles especially in our smaller rural clubs - a great example of this is Aughawillan who won 3 championships in the last 10 years beating larger town teams in the final with a good crop of young players but now they are odds on to be relegated in league and championship this year. Once again I will say that we are producing a lot of high end talented footballers for a county of our size. its the base level that needs a lot of work. It should be a priority to appoint a 'Head of Athletic development - with two or three S&C coaches under him for a 5 year period. That alone would have a monumental effect on Leitrim football. After that we need to look at why we can't produce our own high level coaches - This year is the first year in a decade two of our top teams (Mohill and Fenagh) will have homegrown coaches. Not one of our county champions in the last 10 years have had managers from Leitrim (Unless I'm missing one). Think of the money alone our clubs are spending on managers instead of putting it into facilities which are way behind other counties. James Glancy when he was in his role with the County Board has a lot of great Coach Education events that if he had been allowed continue - This has completely stopped in the last 5 years. Why is that? We have a great location for it in the COE but its not being utilised. Leitrim1234 (Leitrim) - Posts: 340 - 12/03/2025 11:47:51 2596056 Link 1 |
Who are the coaches in with Mohill and Fenagh? Good to see Glancy in with the U20's.

Leitrim football going nowhere until Leitrim Gaa start adopting a long term approach to coaching. The managerial merry go round of the likes of Moran Poacher et al not the way forward. Short sightedness for short term results instead of longer view, would be better to stick with a good coach like Shane ward or someone of that ilk instead of b list celebrity managers. totalrecall (Leitrim) - Posts: 1014 - 12/03/2025 13:38:04 2596080 Link 0 |
Am I dreaming or was shane ward not manager before of the county team? How did we do first time around? What will change this time?

He was brought in for a year very inexperienced after a successful year with the county u21s beating Galway in a Connacht semi final. If my memory serves me. Since then he lead a not particularly strong Manor side to a senior title. He also has a couple of county titles in Fermanagh as coach with Derrygonnelly and now he is with the Leitrim schools. I am sure he would feel he has developed as a coach manager. Himself and James Clancy are working with a very good crop with Manor minors and St Clares. But the seem to be well drilled and coached. Long term having them me involved at schools and under 20 level is probably the best. With possibly senior team when these lads have established then in 5 or six years.

As a keen observer of schools football in Connacht I want to extend my utmost congratulations to St Cuans Galway, St Claires Manorhamilton and CBS Roscommon. Hopefully that St Colmans , Co Mayo could pull off a rare quadruple for Connacht. The apparent vitriol here by others is toxic. moros (Roscommon) - Posts: 1112 - 12/03/2025 22:41:29 2596165 Link 1 |
In his second year we were 2nd last in division 4. Which was embarrassing even for our standards. Also 10+ point defeats to Sligo, Louth and Roscommon in the championship. While he is a good coach it is a long time before he should be discussed as a potential Leitrim manager. southleitrim_mafia (Leitrim) - Posts: 140 - 13/03/2025 08:37:46 2596181 Link 0 |
