Oh yes you just recently got a proper field to play in. But it looks good

I suppose there will be loads of managers linked with the job. Andy Moran wouldn't look at the roscommon job and Roscommon wouldn't look at Andy Moran simple as that. If anyone listened to meath manager after the game he praised his strength and conditioning team. He said we could have ran all day in any temperature. I go on about strength and conditioning a lot because I don't think we have division 3 level fitness and conditioning. For whatever reason for years we neglect that area even in underage and development. Any team can be the fittest in the country but ya have to want to do it. Whoever comes in has a lot of work to do because I think plenty of damage has been done in the last couple of years dave1988 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1283 - 01/07/2025 09:35:08 2622809 Link 0 |
How could the Roscommon job be more appealing than the Mayo job?

It is certainly great to be from Leitrim. Glad you recognised it. Thanks for that. You will never know the feeling though as you are from Roscommon. Thanks.

I suppose the expectations in Mayo are huge. Roscommon would have potential and be more of a challenge, without the literal gun to the head. Although it's debateable if there is a tougher task in football than pulling Mayo over the line. Unless maybe getting us to a Leinster final.

From a physical point I think we have improved since the days of McStay and before, we looked very light. But looking back on this championship and maybe even the past few years, we need to still improve our general fitness. Especially with the way the new rules have meant the game is quicker and more high octane. Is that part of the reason we play such a slow game? If you know you're a seriously fit team that must give you such a psychological advantage coming into the last ten minutes of a game when the scores are tight. Saying that we looked fitter than Cork but couldn't do the basics of kicking the ball over the bar.

When McHugh told us what we needed to do to be properly fit we ( players or manager or Co Board????) said "No". For whatever reason we took a big dip in form from mid March onwards. Usually teams are upping performances from then. Hopefully CB is busy planning their manager hunt while there's a lull before the Club Championships begin....... We had 4 decent to good u20 teams in a row ( 21 to 24) so some talent here to be utilised. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2491 - 01/07/2025 11:30:58 2622843 Link 0 |
A prime example of this was the difference between our u17s v tyrone in term of s+c. at that level they are already ahead of us. how do we expect these players to be ready for county football. Have these players access to s+c / dieticians and is progress being monitored or players just doing their own things.

I heard that as well that McHugh wanted to up the ante but it was knocked back, not sure by who. Practically every team in Div 2 around us bar Westmeath improved for championship, coincidentally where McHugh is. COE has planning 18 months now and gone in for amendments to plans, that decision must be due soon? Will it be a case of getting sod turned soon after or does a tender have to go out for a contractor? FullOfPorter (Roscommon) - Posts: 235 - 01/07/2025 11:54:30 2622850 Link 0 |
Lovely leitrim Where a county game is definitely only on when the balls thrown up And sometimes there's only 1 team their for the throw up OhtobeARossie (Roscommon) - Posts: 1805 - 01/07/2025 12:07:10 2622851 Link 0 |
It's certainly more appealing to a Roscommon man and isn't Andy Moran a Roscommon man.

You are certainly dishing out the compliments today. Indeed it is lovely. Thanks. What is Roscommon's nickname?? Oh by the way you used the word "their" in an incorrect place. Every day is a school day. Thanks. bláthach (Leitrim) - Posts: 167 - 01/07/2025 13:15:15 2622868 Link 0 |
Still they have their boxty and Edwina dancing at the crossroads!

It seems like Andy Moran would be the obvious candidate for the Roscommon job? ruckrover (Mayo) - Posts: 23 - 01/07/2025 13:57:22 2622880 Link 0 |

That's it the northern teams are have serious s@c programs in place for u15 development panels. Like all you have to do is watch back our minor game this year. I was in cavan for it and watched it back and the difference was staggering. That's not Shane Moran's fault. This has to start before minor and continued all the way through to senior. Other counties brought some u20s straight into panel but I don't think we could do the same because they are so far away from that level physically. Hopefully something that will be looked into by roscommon because I'm sure others are looking into what the likes of Tyrone are doing and trying to implement it in their own counties. We are producing the talent but that won't be enough unfortunately

And the great Dermot Early was a Mayo man….

Going back the years Roscommon always gave a strong physical account of themselves whether they were playing well or not. Now I know the 80's and 90s are light years away in how football has moved on but I remember it being said that the toughness of the Connacht finals in 98 hardened Galway for the All Ireland. When do you hear that now said about a Roscommon team? We seemed to lose ground badly when other teams upped it when it came to S and C from the noughties on. We struggle to bring through strong powerful players who can break tackles. I agree with something I heard Paul Rouse say recently, speed isn't the be all and end of, especially if you have a good direct kick passing game but strength and fitness is now more essential than ever.
