Might not be much point playing Keith Doyle full forward if it decreases our ability to win ball around midfield which is our main problem area. However when we have the ball around the middle it might make sense for Keith or Enda to drift in the odd time when the opposition are defending the D. Conor Hand when playing, tends to be more effective out the field and breaking/attacking at pace. (breaking the defensive line). Both Keith and Conor played very well in the early league matches but did not make the same impact when playing/coming on in the more recent matches. A lot for the management to consider. A lot will depend on what team we are playing and what the game plan will be. We have to be far more aggressive all over the pitch for starters. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 717 - 27/04/2025 10:36:58 2604560 Link 0 |
We were so poor last Sunday ( and in many of our League games) that it's hard to know where to start. I did a post wondering about the mood in the camp amongst the players but the post was blocked. I would be interested to know how the players feel about the championship season going forward and about the draw next Wednesday . Do they think we can recover from Salthill or will this Summer just be a write off. At least we start next year in Division one after the most fortuitous of promotions.

Did you honestly expect a post like that to get past the mods. Asking players mid way through a season what their thoughts were? Anyone not getting game time will certainly be unhappy

Not sure about fortuitous. As I said before Roscommon finished up with a point more than those below them Meath,Cork,Cavan and do you think any of that trio deserved more than the 8 points they got? in the end the big win against Cork in round 5 was enough for promotion for Roscommon. Roscommon got deserved wins against Down,Monaghan,Cork,Louth and drew with Westmeath and would have been a deserved win had at least 3-6 wasn't left behind you in that game. Aim for Roscommon players and management I'm sure is to reach the knock out stages of the championship regardless of what group are placed in this Wednesday. Last year reached the last 8 of the championship for the first time since 2019. This year if can reach the last 8 again it will be first time to reach last 8 in consecutive years since also 2017 to 2019. Promotion back to Div 1 along with reaching All Ireland Quarter final can be marked down as a good year if achieved the and latter won't be easy as plenty of teams will be pushing hard to reach it. I was more interested in the views of players getting game time. Something isn't right with Roscommon with the way they're playing.

I'd agree that we need Doyle at midfield while it might be worth trying something different with Enda like putting him in up top. The change might revitalise him as he's not getting joy at the moment further out. I think too much on his shoulders to be creative and he's also In a position that he needs to be up and down the field to attack and defend.

Enda didn't need to be flogged so much during the League. He was playing for Boyle in the League this weekend, as we're all their County men. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2268 - 27/04/2025 16:54:49 2604638 Link 0 |
Meath beat the Dubs, Cork nearly beat Kerry, Monaghan brought Donegal close. Roscommon miles off that level of performance.

Especially with the level of work that middle 8 need to do with the new rules. I know he's older than Enda and coming back from retirement but look at how McGuinness has minded Murphy. Back to clubs might do them no harm. Cody used to make sure the Kilkenny boys went back playing for their club during championship. Nearly never bullied the cow and fair play to Meath to today or be against a fading force in Dublin. The rossies will be judged in the All Ireland series everyone knows what they showed last Sunday wasn't good enough made it all too easy for Galway.

Thanks to Meath winning today we won't have Dublin in Croke Park for the 3rd year in a row in a round 1 group match. We also played them in the group stage in Croke Park 2018,19. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 4021 - 27/04/2025 18:41:31 2604688 Link 2 |
That is some consolation, between the round Robin and the super 8s it was a pain in the backside getting them in Croker every time.

I hope the Roscommon team and management were watching The Sunday Game. They should have recorded it as a reminder as to how real teams play. Just looking at the ability of Meath, Donegal Louth and Armagh to shoot for two pointers makes it look a bit more like the old days before the modern malaise set in. Even the beaten teams showed they are not afraid to have a go from outside the arc. The fighting spirit of most of those teams would make you wonder what kind of sleepwalking mentality has come over our lads and management. The good news is we won't have Dublin again but does it really matter? Good luck to our U20 team on Wednesday. They have a bit of fight in them and if I'm west of the Shannon on Wednesday I will be in Tuam. Rossieforever (Roscommon) - Posts: 100 - 27/04/2025 22:31:50 2604811 Link 0 |
teams on any given day can produce a performance. Roscommon have proved that also by beating Tyrone in Omagh to reach the last 8 of the championship last year and year before beat Mayo in MacHale Park and drew with Dublin in Croke Park and the Dubs went on to win the AI after that game, the current Dublin team will not be winning the All Ireland.

3 good performances but many more not so good. Sadly on the evidence to date we'll do well to avoid 4th place in any group. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2268 - 28/04/2025 11:20:46 2604926 Link 1 |
Am I missing something here? Two pointers scored at the weekend from those teams you mentioned. Meath 4 Donegal 3 Louth 3 Down 2 Armagh 1 Roscommon the week before scored 3 two pointers the same as Galway managed on the day. The state Dublin were in yesterday with the amount of errors made and poor decision making plus they were poor against Div 4 Wicklow for long spells also so a fading force and I don't think it's good news to be avoiding them, Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 403 - 28/04/2025 13:53:44 2605009 Link 1 |
Unfortunately Roscommon went for the two pointers when the game was already over and they had to go for broke. Never attempted one in the first half despite Salthill having the calmist wind I've ever seen.

You are overstating the importance of two pointers. In Pearse Stadium Roscommon's main issue was so poor on kick outs and defensively which included doing some odd zone marking that most certainly won't work with these new rules, something Mark Doran came up with? as I see a few Ulster teams are coached to defend in that manner.
Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 403 - 28/04/2025 17:34:26 2605132 Link 0 |
I think you can zone mark if you have the intensity and fitness to do it. We don't have that. I don't know where we go from here defensively tbh. Can they sort it out in a few weeks I doubt it. As for our forwards we have no structure or game plan anywhere. We look like a team most of the year that's never played together. As for mark doran I don't know what he has brought this year only backwards steps and he's supposed to be a very good coach from what I have heard. Unfortunately I'm not seeing anything positive from our game this year or most of last year.

100% and anyone that's been at a Roscommon match this year agrees with you - lads on here can quote stats and numbers all they like the realty is the team has gone back wards the performances even in the games we won have been pretty dismal.
