Don't really see what's funny about thinking it'll be competitive? People thought that Annaghdown would be bottom of their group, thought they'd lose to Tuam and yet their one of the unbeaten teams in the championship.

Something we've been lacking consistently at county level. He has continued to show this ability again in this year's championship. He's been the best free taker in Galway senior football for almost a decade.
You have your fixtures mixed up there. Oughterard are playing Salthill and Mountbellew are against Maigh Cuilinn. I think at least one of those games will be competitive, if not both."
Right you are with the fixtures. Oughterard should give Salthill a game as should MM to Moycullen

My point is winning 4 in a row has not happened for us since the 60's, we can easily turn our nose up at considering the changes to football format it but it's an achievement that doesn't come around too often. People have short memories too, we went 8 years without a Connacht title from 08 - 16! I know it doesn't mask the pain of 22 & 24, but 4 in a row is a great achievement imo.

Hot contenders Tuam are out.

Oughterard a suberb win. They can't keep leaving it this late in the game to get it together tho. Must be absolutely kicking themselves not to top the group in the first place. If they can get their head around it and get their confidence right, they can definitely beat Salthill. Do they realise that themselves is the question.

MM were playing great football, Joyce didn't take advantage of the Dalys half enough.

Are Salthill and Maigh Cuillin as safe as they think they are? One of them won't be the shock not in the semis I feel.

Heart has to go out to Monivea Abbey."
Nothing against Tuam but curious to know why they are always considered 'hot contenders'?.
Same story every year, a lot of work done for the league and look superior to other teams in March/April, and go flat when they should be humming.

A big backroom team that allowed Damien Comer to be left isolated against Annaghdown.

They have talented players on paper but I wonder do they believe in their own hype too much.

You've pretty much answered your own question, as to why they are thought of as a team who can get to a final and possibly win it. Talented players and consistent performances early in the year. They've also been very close to beating the big teams in recent years. They should have beaten Maigh Cuilinn in last year's semi-final.
They didn't look at the races at all in this year's championship even in the group stage. They well beaten by Mountbellew yesterday and seem to have regressed compared to last year.

Like everything, there's a lot of detail behind the achievements. Joyce definitely brought us on, as did Kevin Walsh before him. However, both seemed to have reached their ceiling by the time they finished and some poor results in the last year.
It's very important to look at the group they inherited also. Joyce came in when a large chunk of the very strong All-Ireland U21 final team from 2017 were coming into their prime. I'd argue that team had more talent than the team which won in 2020, but they came up against a Dublin team with some superstars.
That 2017 team had Kieran Molloy, Dyan McHugh, Cillian McDaid, Peter Cooke, Cein D'Arcy, Seán Kelly and Rob Finnerty as well as Michael Daly, Eoin Finnerty and Dessie Conneely.
They were then backed up by the team which won U20 three years later, Jack Glynn, Seán Fitzgerald, Johnny McGrath, Cian Hernon, Cathal Sweeney and Matthew Tierney, as well as Paul Kelly and Tomo Culhane.
There's no doubt that Kevin Walsh didn't have the same level of talent coming through. They often say timing is everything in sport. Joyce's tenure was timed well from the perspective of having a strong squad of talented players coming through, but we just couldn't get the ultimate job down unfortunately.
