Dublin played Donegal in the Semi Final that year and 9 of that Donegal team were involved this weekend. While the Kerry team that Galway beat in the Semi final have had about 9 or 10 lads that have gone on to play senior.

Hernon was rock solid when introduced, well able to put himself about too, and good in possession. If Galway had a full hand, imo, he'd be a better option at full back. I also feel that positional switch would give Gleeson more confidence with restarts. For whatever reason, Fitzgerald doesn't inspire confidence, often carrying the ball forward with no apparent strategy. However, with the ongoing injury issues, Pj won't make any bold changes, and as another poster pointed out, Hernon is versatile/good engine, and so can stand in for Kelly at midfield if required.

Just realised I never paid me respects! Well done to Galway, throughly deserved! Not just saying this but would really love to see you lads go all the way. I try to get over to your part of the country as often as I can, love it, particularly to An Spidéal for the Ceol! and cause Mrs Sack has family there. I was lucky to be in Croke Park in '83 and '74 for, to quote the great Mícheál Ó hEithir, "The Jack's are back and the Galway backs are jacked". It was well and truly turned on its head on Saturday! Finish it off lads and get Sam back across the Shannon! Onion_Sack (Dublin) - Posts: 286 - 01/07/2024 18:10:00 2556350 Link 3 |
Good observation on Comer. If he's capable of a quiet game that was it, but I also think he was double-marked. Am I getting that right? If so that in itself is a huge benefit to the other players none of whom are slouches. He brings such benefit just by being on the field.

After rewatching the game it looked to me that Galway became the better team when Darcy came on. Even if Kelly was able to play against Donegal he hasn't been himself all year with those injuries so I think I'd start Darcy. However, if Sean was fully fit he'd be the perfect player to track those pacy Donegal wing backs. centrefield99 (Galway) - Posts: 142 - 02/07/2024 04:22:38 2556417 Link 0 |
It's a much deeper panel that 2022 alright. The team has evolved since that final v Kerry. McGrath, Fitzgerald, Mulkerrin in the backs. Maher, Darcy and Hernon weren't even on the panel in 22 smallfrank (Galway) - Posts: 469 - 02/07/2024 11:57:36 2556469 Link 0 |

And then there were Four!! Still coming off the high of that magnificent win over the Dubs but under no illusions as to what's facing us in the semi-final. Jimmy's Donegal are an absolute force at the moment. Chatting recently with some of the Clare lads who had played against them a couple of weeks ago, they just couldn't believe how good Donegal were and how easily they ripped them apart. One of the lads was saying that Clare had been training flat out since Oct but that Donegal's fitness and speed were on another level entirely. They burned them all over the field. He reckoned they have to be the fittest team they ever encountered. This is a Donegal outfit that scored 1-21 from play the last day in Croker vs a strong Louth team. If Galway are going to drive on to an AI Final then we'll have to raise the bar another notch again for Peadar Mogan (definite all star and possible footballer of the year), a brilliant Oisin Gallen, Michael Langan, Ryan McHugh, Caolan McColgan, Eoin bán Gallagher, and of course McBrearty, along with Thompson and others. They're a running machine and their scoring percentages are unbelievable. Donegal are convinced they're gonna take us, that Bán will wrap up Walsh, that big McCole will bottle up Comer, that we'll have no match for the searing pace of their attacking backs, that their highly accurate shooting from range will beat the pressure from our backs etc. Donegal are back training tonight, and behind the friendly comments and camaraderie, Jimmy is quietly gunning for Joyce's scalp - he feels he can outsmart PJ and our sideline and raise the tempo too high for us all over the field. Well, I think we'll be ready. Our men have no medal on the mantelpiece for beating the Dubs and the rabid hunger is undoubtedly there and building more in this group. We've dethroned the kings of Leinster and Ireland, now we want that Ulster scalp. Bring the battle! Can't wait for Sunday week, it's going to be massive. No doubt we will have our work cut out but we should not fear anybody after our win on Sunday. Huge difference in beating the Dubs in Croker & beating a Louth team who I do not agree are "strong" they are comfortably outside top 10 teams in country IMO. Most important thing for Galway is getting bodies right between now and sunday week Walsh Comer even Kelly but as previosuly stated i dont think he has been right for some time which is a pity but also we cant be wasting a sub after 20 mins again. We will need a full deck v Donegal as this could go to the wire. When you think O Flaherty & Daly did not get mins the last day it shows we have a strong panel. Gaillimh Abú

Trains? we've heard of them up in Donegal but we haven't had one since the 1950's.

The national media and their love in for Dublin are going out of their to belittle Galway win on Saturday with the bug in the camp rumours nonsense. they simply can't accept Dublin haven't qualified for the last four of the All-Ireland senior football championship for the first time since 2009. I am naturally a bit worried about this one. Donegal are a team full of speed, movement and shooters across the field, a powerful combination really. It's going to be some battle to get over the line here and speaking to a few Donegal folk they are confident they can do the job. But we should be confident too, we have had an unbeaten championship with a lot of set backs along the way. We are steely tough at the back and mentally there is a lot of belief there after that Dublin win. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1646 - 02/07/2024 19:41:38 2556598 Link 1 |
I was thinking the same myself that John Daly cant get into the team and O Flaherty was really good when he came on in the league and we have Hernon back and Sweeney is also in the mix but cant get on. Its a strong Galway team that is capable of challenging over the next few years. Get Cooke and McLoughlin back next year and its a very strong panel. Use the league next year to get further experience into likes of O Currain and O Conghaile, Egan. JahTribe (Galway) - Posts: 155 - 02/07/2024 20:06:10 2556603 Link 1 |
