Yeah, certainly Heaney is off a bit, giving away possession, losing the ball and getting turned over too easily at times. Shane Walsh has to eliminate the odd bizarre cross field pass that get so easily intercepted and that he's done for years. Daly needs to considerably speed up his movement on the ball - far too ponderous and it will get targeted.

One worry I would have on reflection is the ease Derry got their shots away in the first half, okay fair enough maybe some of them were out of range with the wind etc. but I just felt that our backs communication and intensity was a bit off (compared to last year). ahsure. I said it here before and will say it again that the defence and particularly the half-back line need to tighten up big-time to have a chance at challenging for an AI. As you mentioned, the likes of Dublin or Kerry will not miss some of the chances Derry missed the last day.

I thought are backs are doing a reasonable good job. You can't keep good players quiet for a full game. A lot of the Derry shots that fell short were taken from the stand side, under pressure and from distance. The wind was coming across the pitch to the corner, so it really gave an advantage kicking from the sideline opposite the stand but not so much from the stand side. Out attack is getting quicker and more incisive. More to do but definite upward curve here. The recycle, in particular, is being done at a much higher pace rather than just ambling over and back across the pitch. This is crucial to find gaps. Nothing wrong with recycling as long as it is done with intensity. Any word on Comer, Kelly, Finnerty? If any doubt, I would rest them this week. We cannot have them on half a leg against Armagh. That is not to take Westmeath lightly, but playing injured players rarely works out well. With Tierneys form and McDaid's return we should have enough to cover them in the short term. From what I've heard, the news about Finnerty and Comer's injuries isn't good. Finnerty is unlikely to play again this year, and Comer would only be back if we reach the semifinal. Galway4ever (Galway) - Posts: 219 - 28/05/2024 07:06:47 2547800 Link 0 |
Heard something different so not sure where the truth lies.

What did you hear?

That would be awful news if it's true as both players were at the top of their game and Finnerty in particular was in the best form of his intercounty career. I keep wondering why are all these continuous injuries happening to our best players - surely its not a coincidence?

Comer might be a few weeks, Finnerty a couple longer. Neither should be out for the year, but could be wrong of course. This week's local papers may have a better update.

While Westmeath will play us tough, I think we should beat them which brings us to the Armagh game which will probably determine who will top the group and get a bye into the quarterfinal, this will be a key game in so many ways and is a game that we have to win. You cannot take anything for granted as the hurlers found out last Sunday - there are no "easy games" anymore so the attitude has to be "one game at a time" to use that old GAA cliché!

Everyone is talking 'trajectory' these days. Seems to be the new GAA management buzzword these weeks. Listening to Donoghue, the Dublin Galway result was all 'in the traj' not the tealeaves at all.

If both comer and Finnerty out they big losses comer plagued with injuries last 3-4 years he only came on as sub v Westmeath last year then missed Armagh match and went off ht v mayo in 12,'months he prob only played 3-4 matches also looking at Sean Kelly last day as well he could be struggling also with injuries, 3 weeks ago Galway had full hand to pick from now they could be without 3 starters again ,, Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 1020 - 29/05/2024 18:58:37 2548238 Link 0 |
The best result so possibly for Galway this weekend is ourselves and armagh winning. Facing into armagh with them needing a win could be a tricky task like what happened last year aswell as with comer and finnerty likely to be missing. Win the next 2 games get the bye and it would be brilliant to have a fully fit team for a quater final

Does anyone know of any supporters bus travelling to game on Sunday? Any help on this appreciated. gaillimhboy (Galway) - Posts: 360 - 29/05/2024 20:07:44 2548247 Link 0 |
Surely it would be better for us if Derry win? Assuming we win pretty cosily and Derry win we would have a massive edge on scoring difference and then we could afford to lose the last game and still finish top.

No Comer, Finnerty or Sean Kelly for the weekend. McDaid to start Flemenstar200 (Galway) - Posts: 73 - 30/05/2024 09:52:29 2548301 Link 0 |
Best possible result for Galway, assuming they win, is Derry to win by 1 point PressureKick (UK) - Posts: 256 - 30/05/2024 09:56:13 2548302 Link 0 |
Disaster that. Realistically we won't be getting to a quarter final without them.

I will be surprised if we win 'pretty cosily' if it is true about our critical absentees. On that basis I would grab any kind of win and sincerely hope the injured guys are back ASAP.
