I think at this stage if cluxton transfer to Galway he be a sub management won't change unfortunately ,, it will be there downfall Galway's without doubt worse team prob in top 2 division winning own kickouts and even when he does go short it's along the ground snd players under pressure straight away other top teams win kickouts and they are attacking our half back line slow and poor kickers of ball never go forward with kick Daly takes about 6 solos go 10 yards sweeney at wing forward runs into tackles or over Carry ball I'm not blaming them it's management fault , they kept picking them , Paul conroy kicks more ball away than any player , then Joyce comes out and says we have lots stuff work on he there 5? Years snd worse they are getting,, Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 1022 - 25/03/2024 17:56:28 2533692 Link 2 |
To be fair, no Galway goalkeeper would start ahead of any of them. Even Carroll, who was ahead of Flaherty u21. But I get your point.

Oran Burke has played 1 championship game for corofin? Needs some more credit in the bank. But from what I've seen, he is talented. But many other proven keepers in the county.

I didn't promote Conor Flaherty anywhere in my post. I haven't commented on him at all. I will say that I say him play poorly for his club as an outfielder last year and I didn't see him play in the Sigerson. He surely needs to be playing games in goal to be our best option. Oran Burke doesn't get a game for our club. So same issue. crankyincorofin (Galway) - Posts: 101 - 25/03/2024 18:12:51 2533697 Link 0 |
If Conor has fisted in the goal ye would be singing a different story no doubt. He will do that the next time hopefully. maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1223 - 25/03/2024 19:17:19 2533710 Link 1 |

Need to start thinking outside the box now definitely in 2025. Morgan, Rafferty, Shane Ryan, all playing outfield for the club. A man beside me in Clones that if Beggan doesn't come back, Darren Hughes could be in goal in the summer, then you also have the Marty Clarke talk, position has definitely evolved

Excellent goalkeeper ? and the sarcastic remark about catching his own kickouts says it all

Paul Conroy cant play midfield forever but played in goals in the past. Conroy would be able to ping passes out the pitch but I expect Paul will play outfield for as long as he can. JahTribe (Galway) - Posts: 155 - 25/03/2024 20:58:58 2533741 Link 0 |

Conor Flaherty was actually one of Claregalways top scorers last year.He does play in goals for Sigerson and has done for 4 years and has made 2 finals in a row and semi this year.

Conor Flaherty was ahead of Conor Carroll at under 20 and won an All Ireland final at that age group with Galway.

It's 2019 U20, Oran Burke was in goal. I believe Conor Carroll was the sub. Open to correction

A lot of talk here again about goalkeepers, the one problem doesn't matter who's in goal we don't have a kick out plan we have zero movement from any of our backs and when or if they get it they don't want it, someone posted on this that club teams in Galway have better kick out strategies, so for pj he seems to go long and play the percentages and not to go coinciding soft goals just like Roscommon did on Sunday, Fox.1n.7he.b0x (Galway) - Posts: 138 - 25/03/2024 22:48:31 2533772 Link 0 |
Granted not all of the injuries happened when involved with county. However we do seem to have a lot. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1916 - 25/03/2024 23:35:14 2533776 Link 0 |

Outside of the negatives the last day, I must say I enjoyed the exhibition of high fielding. Although the exponents were mainly Kerry players, Cien Darcy also fielded one magnificent ball. Hopefully, he continues to improve too, playing club football in Dublin. Really (Galway) - Posts: 623 - 26/03/2024 00:24:34 2533782 Link 1 |
Sorry, meant to say that Flaherty was ahead of Carroll underage. But Carroll is a proven keeper at this level now and is ahead of Flaherty now imo.

Ah come on. Whether he had punched in a late goal is irrelevant when acknowledging the massive problems we have with our kickout. A goalkeeper punching in a high ball for a late winner is a one in a hundred moment (probably even less). Kickouts are a goalie's bread and butter. It's a collective responsibility, from goalkeeper to outfield players and management team. It's a massive area of weakness, which is clearly targeted by opposition. The fact that it's been an issue for a number of years and we're still no better at, is a failure. It puts us under massive pressure. Kickouts are a set-piece and can be practiced and planned ad infinitum. You don't expect to win all of them, but most good teams are retaining a very high percentage of their kickouts.
