Hard to see past the Shels. Will take someone to play their game of the season in the knockout stages.

I see Shane Roche has stepped down as of today. TheHogues (Wexford) - Posts: 26 - 18/07/2022 16:11:00 2432768 Link 0 |
Just read it myself. Think it has been on the cards for awhile. Anybody hear any rumours about replacements? Would it be best for results and the the general profile of the game in the county to try get in another big name outside appointment?

And fair play to Shane for stepping in when that other me feiner bolted to under a rock in Mayo. He did his best under really difficult circumstances to improve our fortunes. Delivered 2 championship wins over higher division rivals, and ran Dublin to 8 points.

thank u shane for your efforts, u went through tough times with the covid in the country, replacement? one thing is for sure the county board wont waste a lot of time or money looking for someone, they will give it to someone who will just plod away , keeping his mouth shut and toeing the line, not causing any fuss or embarressing the board over their treatment of football Stmunnsriver (Wexford) - Posts: 2885 - 19/07/2022 09:35:07 2432843 Link 0 |
Hard to know. No matter who it is we need someone who can commit for at least 2 to 3 years for us to have any chance, its being disaster with Banty leaving after a year and Galvin not even that long. Roche wasnt up to it but stepped up when required so deserves huge respect TheHogues (Wexford) - Posts: 26 - 19/07/2022 09:36:46 2432844 Link 0 |
Agreed. We need someone who can organise us defensively also. We have lost a clatter of games by a goal or less over the last couple of years. Especially in the League. Banty did bring us up to div3 and is based in Dublin apparently. But yes it's most important whoever we get has a good 3 year plan and will stay to see it through. Hear Hear, hopefully it's a brave appointment. Some good coaching staff/management available at the minute. Davy Burke in Kildare, theres a few from the Offaly setup available who would be very good. If they go internally, I'd imagine John Hegarty will be high in their thoughts. As long as they go with someone who has Wexford football's best interests at heart and not some name thats on the circuit for a payday. Yeah internally John Hegarty was the fella i had in mind, would be good to see him involved in at least some capacity. We need someone who will commit to it for a few years. TheHogues (Wexford) - Posts: 26 - 19/07/2022 11:10:39 2432882 Link 0 |
Parachuted into a role he was not perhaps prepared for or understood what he needed. Perhaps he just couldn't get what was needed which was a good coaching team. Lets hope whoever they pick this time will be able to get the resources then need to get that team in place. Did the job out of loyalty to the county, I think the fact that over the period of time we didn't hear of player revolts or sudden walkoffs the panel would say that he had their respect. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1897 - 19/07/2022 11:34:34 2432891 Link 0 |
I wouldn't have said the coaching team was a disgrace either compared to other setups. Anthony Masterson is top class, Graham Molloy has plenty of experience and Neil O'Loughlin highly regarded wherever he has been and has won a county championship with Starlights. All good coaches, maybe an older more experienced head required in the mix somewhere but you're talking the likes of Donie Buckley etc, those guys are as rare as hens teeth.

Agree with all the above. There's plenty of time for the county board to get the right man. No intercounty action for 6 months. The coaching will be ultra important and if at all possible the manager should be home grown . Anyway I can't see a big lineup of candidates of proven reputation from outside the county wanting to take on lowly Wexford. We have been on the bottom rung for donkey years and we really must get out of it. There are some green shoots springing up recently. Beating Offaly in the championship and only losing by 1 point to the same opposition in the Tailteen cup is definitely encouraging. Hopefully with fresh management and perhaps a few new players to strenghten the panel we could see good days returning to Wexford football. The ladies left themselves with too big of a task for the second half. Went to the end so cannot fault the commitment. Not sure if you could call it that but the kickout strategy was a disaster in the first half, once they did get it and get over the half way line they gave it away cheaply. Lucky in a way not to be further behind at halftime. Needed the goal earlier, chances were there but didn't take them - Laois were spent at the end but it wasn't to be. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1897 - 31/07/2022 15:29:18 2435609 Link 0 |
Thought it was a very strange decision with just 30 seconds to go on a countdown clock to take a point from that last free instead of trying to work it in somehow to create a goal chance. Basically only leaving themselves with 10 or 12 second by the time the kick-out was taken to try win possession, move forward, and score the goal they needed. Overall though, would have to say Laois were the better side, and deserved the win. Congratulations to them. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2577 - 31/07/2022 16:14:50 2435620 Link 0 |
Kellie Kearney was like McDaid for Galway last week in losing-outstanding. Thought Cullen cause problems off the bench as well, but I wouldn't have taken off Harding-Kenny (unless she was injured) as her attacks forward always draw fouls. However, aside from that ill-advised free at the end, we also missed two tap over frees in the second half before that, including one that was hit right at a Laois player about two yards away. We missed a few goal chances too and could have easily won it on another day. Far, far better display overall compared to last year though, and there is clear improvement and buy-in. beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1451 - 31/07/2022 18:23:56 2435635 Link 0 |
Though the same about Harding-Kenny but she gets through some amount of work and perhaps she knew she didn't have much more in the legs. A lack of composure at times cost them not just those frees but stray passes and rushed shots. Fitness way up on last year, hopefully that tactical awareness and composure will come as going up senior and giving away as much ball as they did in the first half they would be no coming back. Westmeath who looked very good last year are coming straight back down - didn't win one game in Senior. Hopefully they will all stock with it and come back better next year.

I see the mid week start for the football championship has been scrapped and there will now be a 2 week break from the hurling county finals until the start of the football championship. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1421 - 10/08/2022 09:40:48 2436899 Link 0 |
