I would tend to agree. Our club is known i suppose as predominantly a hurling club but we have plenty of players who are football only too and I know they were very frustrated waiting around all year to play last year, to the point that one recent senior did not play at all. If one code is continuously second i feel more and more players who only play that code will just stop playing. Alternating year on year must be the only fair way forward for everybody playing our game. hurlin101 (Wexford) - Posts: 114 - 06/01/2022 10:42:49 2393777 Link 0 |

Problem with playing the football 1st is teams wouldn't put the hurls to 1 side for the football campaign, I'd imagine a good portion of clubs would continue hurling training during the football championship and not give football there undivided attention, alot to weigh up as I understand playing football every year in the late autumn and winter would be demoralising for single code footballers, tricky one overall. bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 06/01/2022 12:20:51 2393792 Link 0 |
not easy have the right solution, if clubs want to keep hurling that's there own choice it shouldn't impact a decision of which goes first lefty (Wexford) - Posts: 214 - 06/01/2022 13:34:10 2393809 Link 0 |
Heart says it would be fairer and more in keeping with the genuinely dual ethos of our county to alternate the football and hurling championships. I think the split season works best though. Playing hurling 1 week and football the next doesnt help the standard of either from a spectators or players point of view.

The thing that always pop up during this debate is the hurling-biased "sure lads who are hurling won't bother doing much football". And why should their stance be taken as the overall approach? I would hazard a guess that senior football clubs are more impacted by lads playing hurling than the other way around. Bar maybe Shels who are unquestionably the best dual club in the county at the minute, almost every other one are affected in some way. Whether that is the higher-ups in the club for some reason prioritising hurling over football (Martin's immediately stand out here, and I believe Glynn are similar), or there simply being more lads who want to focus on just football (Castletown the biggest example). beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1451 - 07/01/2022 15:06:01 2393974 Link 0 |
I'd say most players have a preference for hurling or football also. Very few I know like both codes equally even though they almost all play both for their clubs.

Think Jack O'Leary (St Fintans), Jack Higgins (Castletown), Brian Cushe and Rian Fitzpatrick (both Gorey) who all made appearances in the O'Byrne Cup are underage. Just googled the team who started in last years under 20 championship think Jason Bolger, Paddy D'Arcy (both Kilanerin) Conor Lyne,Alan Mahoney (both Glynn) Liam Doyle (Ballyhogue) and Ciaran Regan (Bunclody) who figured are underage too.

so many teams in senior with just a kick of the ball between them its hard to see who will win it, harder to see who will go down

Impossible in any of the grades. Fancy Fethard to go back up from Inter. Horeswood and Gorey the biggest threats.

So I guess I missed the new format announcement but just reading it. Back to the old days except for a split season and championship games mid week. 14 weeks to play 16 round of the championship across both codes. If hurling goes first you would expect the big duel clubs to have an advantage in the football as it gives them more game time however that it will be tough on players and injuries could become a factor. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1895 - 21/02/2022 12:36:35 2401564 Link 0 |
Looking at club transfers this week a standout probably was Leigh Newport of the u20 county team going from Our Ladys Island to Rosslare. bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 26/02/2022 11:35:58 2402452 Link 0 |
