I like the look of Mayo having said all that. But it's Kerry's to lose.

I wonder how did Dublin's newer players perform today. Players like Tom Lahiff and Sean McMahon. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2406 - 18/07/2021 19:45:56 2361300 Link 0 |

A six point defeat is supposed to "give the rest of us hope". Boycott the final. Enough of this farce. Daith (Kildare) - Posts: 1172 - 18/07/2021 19:59:07 2361322 Link 3 |
We gave ourselves too much to do in the second half, but the meath players today restored a bit of pride in the meath Jersey, conor Lane got the two big decisions in the game wrong the two penalties, hopefully this is the start of something of a revival for meath football, and looking at dublin today was like watching paint dry they are just so dull and boring, kildare should confident they can beat them. In fairness o didn't see Meath putting up a fight in the second half. I only saw the last 10mins as I'd switched back to the epic hurling game. Based on evidence so far Dublin look vulnerable but I think they have enough credit built up to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. They are still favs.

And the Dublin begrudgers trying to see this result as some sort of victory.

A six point turnaround and the game is a draw, the more I think about it the more lucky I think we were.

Didn't see the game, will see some of it later on the Sunday game, was expecting Dublin to win by more, I've been saying it all year, this is Kerry's All Ireland, Dubs era of dominance is coming to an end but they aren't going away you know. This was terrible , meath didn't trouble a poor dublin display today ,can't believe they let dublin keep ball in the meath half near end for 2/3min ,what were they afraid off ?? Theliveshow (Armagh) - Posts: 13 - 18/07/2021 20:50:34 2361354 Link 3 |
To be honest fair point about the penalty I've the Sunday game set to record, will be interesting to see a replay but on first viewing it looked like 2 wrong calls. No doubt Dublin were the better team in first half (especially the second quarter) but the scoreline I thought flattered Dublin a lot at half time. Meath were good in second half, pity we missed other good goal chance we had.

Galway v Dublin should be a great game, looking forward to it. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3187 - 18/07/2021 21:12:29 2361369 Link 2 |
The newer players are just not of the same quality as those they are replacing. Dublin have also reached that critical mass where those sort of players make up too much of the team. When the chips were down, it was the old stagers; MCarthy, Cooper, Fenton, Howard, Rock, Costello, Kilkenny (even though it wasn't one of his better days) who got them over the line. Honourable mention for Sean McMahon. It happens to all great teams. Today was sort of win Dublin have had many's the day against Mayo. The difference being that there is no way today's team would have beaten Mayo 5/6 years ago! So what happens next will depend on how much better likely opponents are compared to when Dublin beat them in recent years. Obviously, Kerry for one would appear to be. The rush to write off the Dubs is premature and largely unfounded . They had the game won at have time took the foot of pedal and found it difficult to get going again. By the end they were in total control and toying with Meath. They still get all the calls and more game after game. Mayo are the nearest challengers and getting close Sam finally. None on the others still in it have the pace and intensity required. Mayo to shade Tyrone in the final. Keephimthere (Roscommon) - Posts: 119 - 18/07/2021 22:04:20 2361410 Link 1 |
I don't think Mayo gave us a bye, did they?! It'll be a dog fight in Croke Park next week to meet the Dubs. Meath are on their way back - scandalous decision from the ref and bystander umpires not to award a clear penalty to Meath that would have changed the course of the game.

Very odd surely that TSG didnt discuss the possible Meath penalty? BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3527 - 18/07/2021 22:18:42 2361421 Link 0 |
Terrible decision for the Meath penalty. Absolute stonewall. RTE must have been told not to talk about refereeing after OSe's general criticism in the last round. No question if that's a Meathman climbing on a Dub it's a penalty and a black card. jonno (Kildare) - Posts: 261 - 18/07/2021 22:23:49 2361426 Link 1 |
I do not like criticising referees but if a referee is well below the standard of inter county championship, it must be acknowledged by the committee who appoints referees. Whether Meath lost or won by 20 points makes no difference as to excuse Conor Lanes poor performance. There is no viable excuse why Conor Lane did not give the penalty to Meath, he was right in front when Fenton took down Brian McMahon, not only was it a penalty it was also a Black Card for Fenton. (Amazing he missed both). Conor Lane had also two umpires who were miked up, Both Conor Lane and his umpires should be taken of the inter county refereeing panel immediately because if they can't see a stonewall penalty right in front of them, refereeing in such a manner will cause even more grief as the championship intensifies. Everyone in Croke Parl who saw the incident knew straight away it was a clear cut penalty.
