Stepping Away And Retirements (Early)

Dublin's Cian O Sullivan announces retirement. A solid corner back. A very good midfielder and an outstanding centre back. Probably the game s best sweeper also. A tough but very clean player. Never saw him do anything nasty on the field. A credit to himself and Dublin. A real role model. Wishing him the very best in his retirement.

Time waits for no man as they say. Another great servant to Dublin retires. Cian was one of those who performed a vital role for Dublin during the last decade. A super half back. Wish him the best.

I héard of a big retirement today as Cathal Cregg has called time on his Roscommon intercounty football career.

Cathal was an excellent footballer and I'd like to wish him well in the future.

Best of luck to Cathal Ctegg and of course Kevin McManamon. Kevin broke Kerry hearts on more than one occasion. He was a direct player a powerful ball carrier. A no nonsense forward that always drove at the opposition. A real club player too with great loyalty. A player I enjoyed watching and admired. Enjoy retirement.

Another one of the Dublin greats retired in Kevin Mc. How many All Irelands would Dublin have if he had not been around? A completely unique style and classy player. Like a lot of that generation of players he led by example and came across as a real gentleman too. Some of those "home-coming" videos of him singing were fantastic also.
As a neutral you'd always get excited when he'd get on the ball. Despite being mostly a sub he was one of Dublins most important players particularly towards the end of seasons. He will be missed.

Great to see a certain lonely fisherman not catching much these days.
All are immune to his stale bait now. LOL
Should move along to a different fishing site, just needs help getting his satnav working apparently ;o)

Yeah KB I could never understand how Kev could be such a powerful runner with the weight of all those All Ireland medals in his back pocket!

Sad news this week for those raised on songs and stories, another legend of our successful era called a halt to a stunning career.

The man who provided a spark for a decade long inferno of never before see dominance that ignited a county and drove the game on to never before scenes of success, step forward Kevin McManamon.

He rightly can put up his feet as one of the most decorated adn succeful players in the game, with no man past or present in the GAA able to look in his eye and think they are more successful.

8 All Ireland winner medals,
10 Leinster Championships
5 NFL's

From ground zero in 2010 following the hammering in 2009 by Kerry, blitz games were held out in Innisfallis, the word on the street was there was mc - something who had fair use of both shoulders and direct running to hurt was tipped for a break through, it was Kev but his brother Brendan, unfortunately we were robbed of his powers through injuries that broke is momentum and development - though he did retire Graham Geraghty, just before, but little did we know we know on those frosty mornings, that we had the most natural born and effective Kerry Killer ever and the man who would change Dublin GAA forever and one of the most succesful players the game was ever going to produce making his way.

The popular narrative will be of super sub, but Kev was so much more, people talk of Cluxton revolutionising the game. but Macker, turned the game from a 15 man game in to a 25 man game. HIs role was pivotal, for years we heard phrases like to beat Dublin you had to "stay with Dublin down the straight" players like Kev were match winners in so many ways. One of the greatest tricks Dublin pulled, that i dont think people have cottoned onto even these days is that Dublin would often start, a team to control the first 50 mins, once in control of the game they brought on waves of players who could hurt you toward the end. Jim Gavin once asked about Macker starting and said " I dont start my best 15, i finish with it".

He will go down in folklore for that goal in 2011, whether he meant or not, but it was a pivitol moment in the history of Dublin Gaa and maybe even the entire GAA. For me and those who watched Dublin that year it wasn't his biggest contribution, it was the semi Vs Donegal, a game with absolutely nothing in it and both teams struggling to break the others defensive sheild, on comes Macker and for me his direct running at the Donegal back line and havoc he caused was the game changer that open up space that won us that game. By such things moments in history are grabbed and legends born.

He wasn't a flash in the pan either, he tortured Kerry in particular, with 2011 minimised as unlucky, Kerry game up to Croke Park for the Semi in 2013 and one of the greatest games of football ever played, the players on the pitch that day will go down as some of the greatest in history and with the game. In the mental pot on comes Macker to do exactly the same again as 2011 and rattles in a goal to send the hill wild. Kerry never really raised their head after that.

In fact he loved torturing Kerry, not only the two famous clutch moment but my mind drifts to that vital shoulder, that buried Peter Corwley in the Semi in 2016, that got Dublin the insurance point and sent them on for another All Ireland, a vital dispossession of David Moran in 2019 which empowers a five in a row. Whenever he came on against Kerry, you could see Kerry psychologically diminishing by 10% and Dublin would get a yard farther. Hes was an absolute Kerry Killer.

It might have been 2016/17 he had an exceptional year, starting almost the entirety of the championship and in with a shout of player of the year until he had a bad final against the Mayo blanket. Being part of that legendary team that did the five and six in a row.

Croker will never be the same without the buzz in the crowd when you saw Macker come on, or the shouts of "give it to Macker" or "on your bike Macker". He showed for Dublin over an incredible number of years and never once did his energy, motivation or commitment wain, he left it all out on the pitch whether it be an All Ireland final or dead rubber down in Breffni in the league in Feb. He was always there never an ounce left not on the pitch. He was such a influential figure behind the scenes and he will be missed, i think its evident last year his loss when he was at the Olympics and how we could have done with him as things turned out.

As a club man he showed the exact same qualities for Judes, i dont think i can remember a game hes missed for Judes and in typical Macker style he is all in and always leading from the front. Love to see him with a DSFC medal before he finishes, despite the bad feeling many have toward Judes in the capital.

A lovely fella, the warmth people feel for him is palpable. He has invested in himself more then once and has now developed a career in sports psychology that has him, working in international events like the Olympics at elite level. Many wont know this but hes been actively involved in Dublin underage developmental squads for a number of years now, while still playing.

I get the sense that this is a see you soon Macker because i am in absolutely no doubt that he will be part of Dublin management teams in the future and perhaps even the Senior manager himself.

But until then, what a career, what an influence, what an impact, the man who forever changed Dublin GAA for ever and and lit the spark that started an inferno of dominance that lasted for a decade and captured the imagination of the county that allowed us all to fulfil dreams we never thought wed see.

Thanks for everything Macker, you owe Dublin nothing and will be remembered and revered wherever Sky Blue is worn.

Legend

Kevin was a good sub in fairness, he was very effective and he did very well against a Kerry team who were gone into transition since our great team of 00s ( our transision in 09 with a load of great players retiring)

Kevin suited Pat Gilroy as pat followed the old Kerry tactic of brínging on a fast player late in the game to run at tired defenders like we used to do with Darren Ó'Sullivan.

Fair play to Kevin, to win 8 allireland medals at home must be a record and I'm sure he'll be looked after by dublin gaa with a coaching job.

He certainly had the Kerry boys psyched out.

it's difficult to know if that was just part of the overall brittleness that Kerry have exhibited for most of a generation now when they see the blue jersey, or whether it was specifically down to Kevin himself.

It would have been interesting had he transferred to one of the lower tier counties that make up Munster. We might very well have seen him come on and score a goal to push Waterford or Clare over the line following the inevitable collapse.

Ya Barney the Kerry team from 2010 on was in serious decline.

From 2009 after losing our goalie Diarmuid Murphy our full back Tommy Griffin our centreback Mike Mccarthy our midfielders Darragh O'sé and Séamus Scanlon Also Kennelly and Tommy Walsh had gone to Oz, David Moran who was breaking into the team was recovering from a cruciate.

A country team can't lose those kinda players and stay on top.
