Hardly an early retirement but Keaney is a huge loss to Dublin and will be missed by many other supporters around the country. Always gave 100% and unlucky not to win an All Star in the few years Dublin hurling was going good under Daly. Very talented physically huge and always a warrior. I agree with you that he is to be commended for staying the course with the hurlers when he could have stayed kicking football. Others had just as much hurling talent but opted for the football while he opted for hurling and stayed the course. Hugely physical and this was clearly shown in that great photo in the club game where he and John Small shouldered each other in Parnell and where he again hit totally by accident an Eire Og defender in the Leinster Club final in O Moore Park. A great competitor and intelligent distributor of the ball especially as he got older. Dublin had an absolutely outstanding warrior in Conal Keaney. He will be.missed for his leadership also. Ciarán Sheehan (Cork) has retired due to persistent knee injury. Ciarán might not be a household name but when he came on the scene first as a 19 year old he had everything. Went to Oz for a few years and came back but has has been so unlucky with injuries he never got back to where he was. Glad he won an all ireland in 2010.Best of luck to him in his retirement" Cork had many many stars over the years, in all sectors of the pitch, no more than any other, once they dont win an All Ireland (or more than 1) they seem to be forgotten about outside their own counties...such is life..Cork could field a possible team to compete with Dublin from all their teams over the last 15 years or so...it happens..they have a chap midfield now a fair haired chap, wears the socks pulled up the whole time, reminds me of David Moran of Kerry or our own engine in years gone by Ciarain McManus, hes one of the best footballers outside of Dublin and Kerry I seen in recent times..but..if Cork dont win, the turn over in Cork is high..people wont remember him in a few years if he steps away... I saw Georoid Hegarty roast Ian Maguire in an u21 football game a few years back, if Hegarty and William O'Donaghue were still playing football they would be up there with the top midfield pairs in the country. Barrett made one of those international squads to play the Aussies. He played club with Clonakilty in Cork, and was arguably the best club player in all of Cork (at a time when Cork could win AIs), even into his late 30's. Barrett was a pure ball of steel. Fitzgibbon at full-forward, kicked 3-4 from play one day for Munster, when he'd the good supply of the ball coming in from the Kerry lads. It's a testament to how good Fitzgibbon was, when you'd Kerry lads saying at the time that they'd trade Bomber Liston for him. He played with Parnells in Dublin and regularly made the Blue All-Stars club team. Mick Ahearne played four years in a row at wing forward for Munster (1973 to 76, afaik) in the Railway Cup. He was a classy operator." I work with a former Limerick player from that era, he rated Donal Fitzgibbon, Paddy Barrett and Paddy Ivess very highly. Also Philip Danaher and Dan Larkin 2 Munster rugby players played for Limerick at that time which wasn't uncommon. But anyway he felt there could have being more got out of that team but they were treated 2nd class to the hurlers. He told me the hurlers and footballers use to train in Mary immaculate College and after training sessions the hurlers would get steak dinners and the footballers would get corned beef sandwiches and a bottle of milk.
