It very much is. Play the league if you can but otherwise void them I think we will have inter county all Ireland championship at some stage this year as you have to get back some normality including sport at some stage as you cant close off forever 2021 isnt 2020. Teams wouldnt be same. Coaches might not and most likely wong be same. You cant just pick up a competition 12 months later and treat it as the same thing. That isnt fair at all and is much more unfair than voiding this season KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3480 - 16/05/2020 23:24:32 2278433 Link 1 |
Ach - I don't think that's a valid criticism. It's a lucky team that plays the same 15 players in every game. Until we know when we're starting, nobody can decide on the right route. We're just saying what we'd like to happen. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 17/05/2020 10:38:23 2278445 Link 2 |
I'd rather a Championship too but he has a good point in that the League is almost complete so why not finish it altogether? It wouldn't take long since time will be short by the time they get the go ahead to play. IF they do.

An interesting report by STATSports a company that a lot of the county teams use. What it may do is allay some of the fears that some players could have about returning and the idea that if one player had the virus it means everyone has it. That just wouldn't be the case - unless of course they all drank from the same water bottle! zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1790 - 17/05/2020 13:07:36 2278461 Link 1 |
I would rather the championship too but I dont think we have the time this year. I would be happy to see the league finished with half fit players in Dec/Jan but for me a half arsed championship in the middle of winter isnt really the championship at all and if we do start it and get a second wave then we just have even more half finished tournaments in 2020

So we are finishing the league as well. This is hilarious! TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7830 - 17/05/2020 14:11:53 2278479 Link 6 |
There isn't a player or manager out there who is thinking about the league. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7830 - 17/05/2020 14:50:20 2278483 Link 5 |
My idea was if next years season goes ahead to finish it instead of the January warm up tournaments. Im not sure what you mean by "as well" as well as what? I dont see anyone saying we can play both league and AI

Wasn't having a pop at you. But it's a whole other can of worms to start talking about finishing the league!

Playing sports is risky in the covid 19 enviroment. Why not play and finish the less prestigous Allianz leagues. It is a safer bet than the All Ireland. There is less crowds, and less games to play. As a trial run, let the GAA finish the league in August, and wait and see. Maybe have a knock out tournament in September and October. Forget the Championships this year. This is just a trial run for next year. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2513 - 17/05/2020 16:46:34 2278509 Link 1 |
We still don't know when it'll end. It's a key bit of information. If you're going to have a knock-out tournament though, it may as well be the Championship. Modified as it might be with no SuperEights or back door, but still the Championship. And if we do indeed start in August, which is a big "if", the selectors may well appreciate finishing the league off as a warm-up to the Championship games. Couple of games apiece - maybe dispense with the play-off bit, it all depends. We can only wait and see what happens. I'll just be happy to see some more games in 2020. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 17/05/2020 18:25:23 2278520 Link 1 |
There is talk of a Covid 19 second surge and it's effects. That is why I suggest the Allianz League as a trial run. No disrespect to Allianz, it is a great sponsor and a great competition. If the GAA finish the League and trial the new social distancing procedures. And see how it goes. If it goes belly up, well it is the" league". Best be prudent with the Corona virus imho. And managing large crowds and games. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2513 - 17/05/2020 19:05:25 2278526 Link 1 |
Not true. Plenty would be thinking about it especially players and managers from teams in Div 2, 3 with the opportunity to gain promotion and those hoping they avoid the Tommy Murphy mark 2 Cup. Mayo no doubt will be hoping the league is voided as that's the best way to avoid what would have been relegation if the remaining games are played. I meant if they were given a chance between league or championship this year.

How do you know Mayo would have been relegated if the remaining two games had been played? Mayo have got out of relegation dogfights before. Nothing has been decided. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11219 - 17/05/2020 20:21:45 2278531 Link 5 |
Maybe if it were a open draw instead of Provincials.

A far more difficult position Mayo found themselves and with two very difficult games to play. I think most would agree Mayos best hope to avoid the drop for certain is for the 5 rounds that was played in the spring are now declared null and void.

I hope they are played. Teams shouldn't be relegated or promoted when games are left to play and so much at stake..

Points difference doesn't do them any favours. I'd fancy them against Tyrone and then it's all to play for against Galway. It's sport and anything can happen.
