Something has to give as you don't have enough weekends left in the year from October for that to work.

Thank God for that. Announcement gives clarity to everyone. Should have come sooner but it is welcome. Hopefully we'll be on a much better place by then. Sport shadows in significance to the health of our nation. moros (Roscommon) - Posts: 1075 - 06/05/2020 18:15:04 2277648 Link 2 |
'No appetite for games behind closed doors' can be roughly translated as 'no money to be made from games behind closed doors'. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 06/05/2020 18:36:00 2277653 Link 7 |
I think an inter-county championship behind closed doors would be soulless. Should have just wrote it off this year and leave 2020 to the clubs.

Soulless would be better than none at all Would still between media and everything else be likely to be around 100+ in attendance World rugby put it as 167 minimum needed to allow a pro rugby game go ahead as per article on the42. David Clifford says he wants a championship behind close doors, it would be better than having no championship, then the GAA come out and say there is no appetite for this within the association. No appetite? How can they say this? summerof09 (Meath) - Posts: 314 - 06/05/2020 19:52:39 2277660 Link 2 |
David Clifford is a 21 year old, student. Since when has his opinion been the deciding factor in when the GAA should resume the Championship?

Yes you are right I'd have little interest in it personally although I'd probably watch the games when it comes to it because there won't be a lot else on let's be honest. We will see how everything goes over the summer. Sport is the least of many people's worries right now GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 06/05/2020 20:06:24 2277663 Link 7 |
For what's is worth the Korean Baseball League just got underway to almost empty stands and Merkel said the Bundesliga can get underway this month. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2100 - 06/05/2020 20:09:55 2277664 Link 0 |
Sure we know why the grab all are saying there is no appetite for games behind closed doors coz there is no €€€€€ in it for them. Seánie Shea said that he's ready to go as soon as possible as well in an interview with Tomás O'Sé at the weekend. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 06/05/2020 20:16:56 2277665 Link 3 |
Absolute nothing statement . It's just same pretty much as government said last week. There will be no club or county with this virus around. Clubs I doubt very much have any liability either insurance wise against Covid 19 and players or supporters could take this virus home to relatives and people could and will die. Can't play without a vaccine or this virus gone. GAA are just stalling for time. They should just come out and call it a day for 2020 Talking_Sense (Meath) - Posts: 209 - 06/05/2020 20:58:56 2277672 Link 1 |
Would have been optimistic until this point on a championship, but think Oct is massively unrealistic and poorly advised. Aug - Oct was the ideal timeline. Starting in Oct is bang in the middle of flu season and with this virus - good luck. Imagine squeezing into a socially distanced Autobahn, Fagans or McGraths, at least you could have a drink outside before the clocks changed. Then traveling home for evening games in the dark - thinking of non Dubs here of course. Winter ball as well. The whole thing is one big virus flavoured soup. It will be behind closed doors or not at all in my opinion. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4441 - 06/05/2020 21:52:46 2277673 Link 2 |
Incase you didnt know, he's the Kerry captain. Players from all over the 32 counties would share the same opinion. Unsure about what his age and occupation has got to do with him offering his views on whether the GAA should play games behind closed doors. To say theres no appetite for this, is an insult to the players who have been training their boll*cks off all year.

There will be no championship football this year. GAA have appointed 5 doctors on advisory committee so no way in hell they will advise for games to go forward. I think more importantly that underage club games should go ahead and this virus poses no treat to young people. GAA will make no money with behind closed door games but I can't see how they just can't go with smaller crowds at games and space them out. To be honest there is nothing in this statement that wasn't expected, club was always going to happen before inter county and saying October for inter county would allow most club championships to finish - we altered formats perhaps. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1791 - 07/05/2020 02:14:25 2277677 Link 1 |

Watching the Tonight Show Last night with Matt Cooper there won't be any football played this year. There was 2 GPS on and said schooling in the future will be different too. It's OK the GAA being hopeful of a opening but there is reality too. If a French football League cancelled there league, how do you think local GAA club games will go ahead in a few months? There will be no GAA without a vaccine, the sooner someone with common sense in croke park comes out and says this the better... just think of all the different scenarios where infection of this virus could potentially be passed if games did go ahead, and ye are all assuming players will want to play, let's see how many still want to have a championship in october when this virus is still here, I doubt very many Rossie14 (Roscommon) - Posts: 33 - 07/05/2020 09:07:18 2277684 Link 1 |
In case you didn't know, the Kerry captain is not a qualified medical expert. I prefer to listen to health and medical experts, than an unqualified 21 year old with no medical qualifications, and leave the decision on when play restarts to qualified medical experts, who haven't just got the welfare of the GAA on there mind, but the health and risk of deaths of the whole population of the country. I never said "there's no appetite for it", don't put words in my mouth. And in case you didn't know, there are players from all over the 32 counties who very uneasy about returning to play sport at this moment.
