I think Wexford have the best ones for me. Kelly From Killane, Booulavogue etc. And modern ones like Dancing at the Crossroads. BliainanÁir (Laois) - Posts: 598 - 01/10/2018 21:38:59 2144692 Link 1 |
I'd prefer the The Moon Behind the Hill over The Rose of Mooncoin as Kilkenny's anthem.

For the Wee County we would have Red is the Rose, farewell to Carlingford and the Turfman from Ardee.

Ben Bulben of Sligo, the Green Glens of Antrim. There's a website, countysongs.ie that gives a selection of songs for the rest.

offaly rover is a great song, the county song of wexford is boolavogue but dancing at the crossroads, the purple and gold have sort of taken over. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 03/10/2018 11:41:10 2144928 Link 0 |
One of my abiding memories is being in the Palace Bar in Fleet St before an All Ireland final some years ago and the Tipp boys belting out 'Slievenamon' . Love blue and gold colours but not a Tipp man but still the hairs stood on the back of my neck. Powerful song when sung well. facethepuckout (Roscommon) - Posts: 219 - 03/10/2018 21:51:25 2145028 Link 1 |
Wexford have 3 really brilliant songs Perfect 10. P. J Mc Call must have been a genius. The Offaly Rover dates from circa 1969, and was written by the late Frank Sweeney. Offaly had a useful football team then, and the tradition in big games at Croke Park was to play songs from the competing counties at half time. Offaly had no big name song, unlike certain counties. The rest is history as they say. 'The Green Fields around Ferbane' is an Offaly emigration song, popular in the Ferbane area, no doubt it will be aired in a few weeks if Ferbane win the Senior Football Title. Dermot O'Brien recorded it many years ago. It is a good tune, never seems to have got exposure on the national scene. thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1879 - 04/10/2018 10:58:36 2145077 Link 0 |

Dermot O Brien is Ardee's finest son. He was captain of the great Louth winning team in the wonderful year of 1957.

Croke Park most certainly don't want any song that has anything to do with our past . Sean South is by a country mile the most well known and sang Limerick song out there but wouldn't suit Croke Park . Limerick your a lady whilst well known by the older generation is as flat as a pancake , Shanagolden even would be better but that also features reference to the enemy even if it was over a hundred years ago . CP has gone PC in musical terms. The old tunes are replaced by anodyne pop tunes.

1999 semi or was it 2004 or 2006 All Ireland Final if I remember correctly at halftime the stadium played the song 'take me home to Mayo' which is a rebel song about Michael Gaughan who died in England and wanted to be buried in Mayo, never played it since, instead they play a west Mayo song 'Green and Red of Mayo' now riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 08/10/2018 12:51:21 2145566 Link 0 |
Galtee mountain boy is brilliant. Slievenamon is grand, bit over done though. The tradition of tipp fans gathering on Talbot street the morning of an all Ireland and remembering and singing Sean treacy is as good a tradition I know of

Galtee Mountain Boy is a great song, my first All-Ireland was the year a Tipp player sang it after beating Kilkenny. I can't remember the players name. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 1820 - 09/10/2018 12:13:00 2145762 Link 0 |
