Meath staged a terrific second-half comeback to defeat Offaly by 1-25 to 0-21 in Navan this afternoon and progress to a Leinster SFC semi-final date with Dublin in a fortnight’s time.
Offaly had ruled the roost for large portions of the first-half at Pairc Tailteann, as the scores of Dylan Hyland and the superb Keith O’Neill saw them out to a 0-8 to 0-0 lead after the opening quarter of an hour.
The hosts’ first score of the afternoon came via a Eoghan Frayne free in the 16th minute and their tally would be doubled by Mathew Costello a minute later, but the scores of Kyle Higgins (two-pointer), Shane Tierney, Jack Bryant and Hyland saw Offaly towards a commanding 0-15 to 0-5 lead at the break.
Bryan Menton and Costello landed early second-half points for Robbie Brennan’s men and they’d keep their foot on the throttle with two-pointers from Conor Duke and Costello that trimmed their arrears to four points by the 47th minute.
The Division 3 champions registered a two-pointer of their own by Paddy Dunican that looked to keep the Royals at bay, but the momentum was with the home side and they’d be level with another Costello two-pointer being backed up by James Conlon’s point off the bench in the 61st minute.
Midfielder Jack Flynn was the next Meath player to sail over from outside of the arc and Conlon did likewise ahead of the substitute bagging the game’s only goal in the 70th minute to put a seal on his side’s superb comeback victory.
