Padraig Pearses clinched their third Roscommon senior football championship title in six years thanks to a 1-11 to 1-9 victory over Roscommon Gaels at Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.

In the challenging conditions brought on by Storm Ashley, Pearses were able to see out their Fahey Cup triumph as points from Paul Carey and Jack Nevin late on proved the difference.

The victors were 0-4 to 0-1 in front when Eoin Colleran hammered in their goal midway through the first-half, and although it’d be cancelled out four minutes later by a John McGuinness major, the Gaels still went in at the half trailing by 1-7 to 1-1.

Rory Carthy and Mark Purcell would help to get the trailers motoring in the second-half, as their points helped trim the difference to two, before a McGuinness point made it 1-9 to 1-8 with five minutes left in normal time.

Carey’s free steadied the ship for Pearses and Nevin’s point in injury-time proved the insurance as they claimed their third ever SFC crown.
