Mullingar Shamrocks moved into the last eight of the Westmeath senior football championship thanks to a 2-9 to 0-9 victory over The Downs at TEG Cusack Park yesterday.

Denis Corroon struck for 1-6 over the hour as the Shamrocks saw off the 2022 champions by six points in the end to ensure their progression towards the knock-out stages.

Corroon's goal came inside the opening five minutes and would be backed up by Conn O’Hanlon firing another to the net in the 23rd minute.

Those helped the would-be winners towards a 2-3 to 0-4 interval lead and, despite Luke Loughlin pulling back some scores for The Downs, frees from Corroon down the home stretch ensured the 13-time winners a place in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, St Malachy’s recorded a 1-10 to 0-8 win against Shandonagh yesterday at TEG Cusack Park, where Shane Corcoran bagged the only goal and Jack Murphy weighed in with 0-3 for the winners.
