Aaron McKay was the unlikely goal-scoring hero of Armagh’s All-Ireland SFC final victory over Galway.

The full back admitted that raising green flags is a ‘rarity’ for him after he got forward to palm substitute Stefan Campbell’s pass into the Galway net in the 47th minute. While Campbell’s impact off the bench was instant, McKay seemed to be in no doubt that ‘Soupy’ was attempting to fist a point instead.

"He wasn't passing. Soupy never passes, especially to me,” he jokingly told BBC NI.

"It's a rarity (for McKay to score a goal). The boys were slagging me, looking in the match programme I only had one point in championship football and it was on my debut, and it should have been a goal. 

"Maybe it was written in the stars."

McKay also noted how a litany of heartbreaking defeats had only strengthened Armagh’s resolve.

"You can't put into words how much heartache that we've been through, penalties and everything else, trying to get rid of 'Geezer' [Kieran McGeeney] as well," he continued.

"We just stuck in, all those boys from 1-44. They just kept grinding. We don't quit. We're just delighted they got the just rewards for all their hard work."
