Bulfin takes Westmeath hurling reins

Seoirse Bulfin

Seoirse Bulfin is the new Westmeath senior hurling manager.

The Limerick man’s appointment comes just a few months after he left neighbours Meath on the eve of their ill-fated Joe McDonagh Cup campaign. Unsurprisingly, the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Royal County came up for discussion at last night’s online county board meeting, with both Lough Lene Gaels and Castlepollard voting against his appointment.

However, Bulfin was still ratified as Joe Fortune’s successor by 23 votes to seven.

Bulfin, whose backroom team will include David O’Reilly, Fergal Lynch and Michael Frawley, guided Meath to an Allianz League Division 2B and Christy Ring Cup double last year. Prior to joining the Royals, he amassed a wealth of experience as Davy Fitzgerald’s right-hand man over an 18-year period. They spent one year together at Waterford, five with Clare (winning an All-Ireland in 2013) and another five years at Wexford (winning a first Leinster title in 15 years in 2019).
