Joe Canning has ruled out a future bid to become Galway senior hurling manager.

As speculation continues to surround Henry Shefflin’s future following Galway’s early championship exit at the hands of Dublin, Canning – who was a selector with the U20s this year and the minors before that – says he has no interest in stepping up to the senior job.

“It’s not something I think about whatsoever. I’m with the 20s and playing with the club as well. (Managing) the senior team is a full-time job. I’m just enjoying giving a bit of time to the 20s as much as I can,” he told Ireland AM on Virgin Media.

The Portumna clubman also feels Henry Shefflin shouldn’t have to shoulder all of the blame for Galway’s early demise.

“You can’t blame anyone when you have 30-something players and management involved,” he added.

“You can train as good as you want and have the best management around you, but sometimes on the day things don’t work out and unfortunately that’s what happened Galway this year.”
