Former Louth GAA chairman Peter Fitzpatrick says Derry are ‘very, very lucky’ to have Mickey Harte as their manager.

After a successful start to his reign, things have turned sour for Harte and his Derry team who must beat Westmeath on Saturday to stay in the All-Ireland reach. But Fitzpatrick thinks the three-time Tyrone All-Ireland SFC winning manager, who transformed Louth’s fortunes before his shock move to the Oak Leafers last autumn, is being unfairly criticised.

"I think Derry are very, very lucky to have him," the ex-Louth manager and chair told BBC NI.

"When I became chairman, I said the only way we would get out of it was to get a good manager. I approached Mickey Harte, he was still manager of Tyrone when there was word he wasn't going to renew his contract with Tyrone.

"He told me he would like to stay on for another 12 months with Tyrone, but if he didn't then he would contact me.

"He's a man of his word. He rang me, we met up and the rest is history."
