Trio shortlisted for Cavan vacancy

Raymond Galligan, Jason O’Reilly and Micheál McDermott have emerged as three candidates for the vacant Cavan senior football manager's job.

With the deadline for nominations from the county’s clubs passing on Sunday night, a report from AngloCelt.ie yesterday said that the three men are now in the running to succeed Mickey Graham who stepped down from his post a fortnight ago after almost five years in charge.

All-Star goalkeeper Galligan, who has made over 100 appearances for Cavan and has not yet announced his inter-county retirement, is certainly a surprise candidate for the vacancy at 36 years of age.

Belturbet man O’Reilly steered Cavan Gaels to SFC success in 2017 and is now in his second stint with the Cavan Town club, having also worked under Terry Hyland when the Lacken native was in charge of Leitrim.

Former Clare manager McDermott was over Ramor United when they captured the senior championship in the Breffni County in 2016 and also led Wolfe Tones to the Meath SFC crown two years ago.

After Sunday night’s deadline for nominations, the next move now at county board level is to appoint a sub-committee that will move the process forward.
