Conall Higgins struck the winner in a penalty shoot-out as Derry eventually came out on top against Monaghan in this evening’s Ulster minor football championship final at the Athletic Grounds.

Having trailed by three at half-time in normal time, Monaghan clawed it back and it was Matthew Finn’s point in the fifth minute of injury-time that forced the extra periods at the Armagh venue where the full-time score read 1-13 to 3-7.

Higgins pointed Derry back in front early in extra time but the Farney lads weren’t going away and, trailing by one towards the finish, Ger Dillon sent over a pressure free to ensure the decider went to penalties.

In the end, it was this coolly struck spot kick from Higgins (see it below) that landed the Fr Murray Cup for Derry, marking a 16th provincial success for the Oak Leaf County in the grade.
