Cathal Flynn's defence-splitting pass to Brían Cooney for TUS Midlands' opening goal was arguably the standout moment of last night's Trench Cup final at the SETU Arena as the Athlone College comfortably defeated DKIT 2-11 to 0-9 to capture their first title in 31 years.
With the game finely at 0-7 apiece midway through the second-half, the onrushing Cooney latched onto a superb delivery from Offaly star Flynn before tucking the ball past goalkeeper Shane Garland. John Donnellan's side followed that up with another green flag which Brandon Kelly raised via the penalty spot.
Cooney's father and former Westmeath manager Jack was captain when the midlanders previously won the Trench Cup in 1992, known as RTC Athlone back then.
